I have always wanted to harvest a whitetail buck that was still in velvet. There are only a few states that open early enough to have a legit chance to get one. Kentucky is one of those states, and their archery season opened saturday. We had been monitoring our bucks through trailcams and over the past week noticed most had shed their velvet. In the mornings we just glassed the fields to watch the deer go back to bed and would set up on the edge of the bean fields to catch them coming out in the evenings. Sunday evening the deer began moving late. At ten till 7, I watched our biggest buck emerge in the field and got to watch him for about 30 minutes before he got around the corner and out of site. About that time I spotted a heavy bodied buck entering the field in my corner. I got ready, just in case. Before I knew it, he and 2 other bucks were in the woods behind me paraleling the field edge. I had to let one I call baby face go by me before this guy, we called "wide 8", who was still in velvet stoped 10 yards south of me. I hit him high lung and exit was in the opposite arm pit. I swear I watched that lighted nock zip right through him in the twighlight. He bounced about 70 yards up the hill and tiped straight over. By 11:00 he was caped and quartered and I am excited to be able to take my first velvet buck to the taxidermist! He was a heavy bodied and full blonde velvet 8 pointer.
