Well, it was a tough day for Dad and I to say the least. I had not done any pre-fishing at all for this tournament because I fished the upper Nick the weekend before. And, Dad did not have a chance to practice either because he was too busy. No excuses though.
So we started out in one of our best pre-spawn areas. I caught a small meanmouth pretty early on and that was it for that stop. We kept working it for a couple hours and decided that was not the ticket. Moved to a rocky bank that produced some fish for us a couple weeks back and Dad caught a decent smallmouth but it did not measure. Kept working this stretch for an hour or so and I had a fish load up on my JB that was feeling better and better as it came towards the boat, but pulled off sight unseen. I later told Dad that fish set the tone for our day. Kept working this area for a while with nothing more to show. Moved into a cove and tried some shallow stuff for a couple hours and zero'd. Saw a lot of bait activity in there but no help. Then I got the bright idea to go into CFP. I thought that all the blast off traffic had subsided, WRONG! We went in there and BOAT U.S. was still letting boats go 5 at a time. We tried to fish a stretch that worked for us in the last tournament but it was useless. So we wasted a good 30 minutes in there. After that we went and tried some water that we already had hit earlier to see if some fish had moved up and nada. Ran around fishing some deeper areas and could not get anything going AT ALL. Our last stop was the entrance to HBSP. We marked a load of fish there while waiting to blast off. I started throwing a deep diving crank bait and that is where our 1 and only keeper came from. With an hour to go we decided that our best chance was to sit there and fiddle with that school; but we could not get anymore to play. Threw a bunch of different lures at them including the trusty 'ol shakey head and no takers.
Hats off to all those that finished in the $ and to those that got a limit on a tough day for some.
