Got the boat out yesterday and hit Harrison Bay. Found a few spots where the depth finder went nuts marking fish around 15-30 feet deep with an overall depth of 40 ft. Looked like fish EVERYWHERE. The only problem was we couldn't catch a thing. I tried every crappie rig I could think of. Not even a sniff. What gives? Was this a mirage?

Some finders can be more "optimistic" than others. My brother used to have an Eagle on his Stratos that would mark fish in his driveway. Get on the menu for those Garmins and adjust the sensitivity some. It could have been backscatter ... but it could have also been fish. Just because they're there, doesn't mean they want to bite.

I always wanted the manual for those 240's Corey, but the previous owner didn't have them any longer. You might email Garmin and see if they could send / sell you one.

Alot of the times in that depth of water and this time of the year, you are seeing wads of baitfish. Some finders report them as big fish. Turn back the senitivity when you experiance that and you may see a lot of the images going away. What is left on the screen my be fish.

the first thing i would say is turn off the fish ID if you ahve not. Fish ID tells you not much at all. it will not show you bait at all and will show stumps rocks bait and every thing else as fish. then turn the sens. down. also check to make sure it is not motor noise.
