Man did the wind ever blow today!!!!! Got on the lake at 7 this morning and already the wind was blowing so hard CCSM and I decided to pass on the crappie and fish for bass. Those little baby baits for crappie I hate trying to fish in high winds. I gave CCSM leasons on how to fish for winter bass all day but I must be a poor teacher.emoEvil I boated about 25 fish and CCSM got blanked. I only had five Largemouth, one crappie, and the rest were whites. I caught one on a rattle trap, one on a jig and all the others were on the ol' silver buddy. I tried to let CCSM borrow one but he would not do it and did not have any himself. Most of the bites came in the 13 to 19 foot depth and I was jigging them off the bottem under schools of shad. The best one was 2 lbs. and it was the one on a trap off a wind blown point of rock. The temp of the water ranged from 49.3 up to 52.4, the air temp said it was 42 but the wind chill had to be below freezing and it snowed on us while we were out there. At 2 the wind had got so bad and my fingers were num so we called it a day.emoBigsmile My fingers don't want to hit the right keys so I am going to go warm up.emoCoolJmax

Sounds like at least some fun. When it gets cold like that it can be miserable. I have an idea where you were jigging up those fish, didn't we talk about it when we were out last Sunday? Anyway, I wish that CCSM would have tried your "buddy". They can be really good baits. Were you using a 1/4 or 1/2ozer? Did you try to fish the spot that we fished Sunday? I was wondering if the fish were still there off and on or not.

Sounds like you guys (at least one of youemoPoke) had a pretty good day for this time of year. As bad as the weather was, I would have loved to have been out there.

Hey polo I tried your 4 and a half spot and not a single bite. Fished all around it. There was a couple of them caught jigging along the old bank of Wolftever Creek near 58 but the majority was caught near Harrison Bay State Park out in one of the large flats in the deeper waters like I said at about 13 to 19 feet. I was using the half oz. doing a staggered jump two to three times and than letting it fall back down. I tried to make it look like an injured shad trying to swim.emoThumbsup Jmax

I need to get out there sometime and you need to show me how "jiggin' a buddy" works. I really tried to fish a jigging spoon some to get some confidence with it last summer and I caught some good fish but mostly stripe. I do have some silver buddies and need to get out there and use them before it gets too warm. I know you use them all the time but from what I've read they are more productive in the winter months.

Ok, I've learned my lesson ----- I'll have silver buddys the next time I go!!! I was using a tail spinner type lure, kind of like a little george, that my uncle makes. I've had some success with it in the past, but they wanted the "buddy". Thanks to Jmax for the "lesson", I'll do my best to return the favor the next time we go!!!! It was really cold ---- I mean really cold. I couldn't believe how cold 40 degrees could be, but the wind chill had to be in the teens. Like everyone else, I'm really looking forward to spring. By the way, Jmax didn't mention the two bass we found dead ----- A 17" largemouth had tried to eat a 14" or so largemouth head first. The fish got stuck and Jmax spotted them floating in Wolftever. Now that was the ultimate visual reminder that "gluttony" can kill!!!!!

And Jim, you know how I was right on with the length of all your undesized fish before you measured them ----- That's right ---- I was only fishing for big fish and they just weren't biting the day we wentemoLaugh emoLaugh Well that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!!

I have got to admire CCSM and give him credit on this.emoPoke I have fished with a lot of guys over the years but I never seen a guy that could look at a fish and tell me to the 1/4 of an inch what the length was until I met CCSM. It is truely amazing to me his ability to tell me just by looking if a bass was 14 inches, 14 and 1/4, 14 and 1/2, 14 and 3/4 inches. But I will tell you all this he did it with the greatest of accuracy. I asked him how he was able to do that with such preciseness and he told me he is an expert at catching bass just under the legal length limit and over the years has acquired this ability.emoLaugh emoLaugh I saw this with my own eyes and am not joking on him being able to do this. I guess if he is in the boat you do not need a golden rod to measure.

I think that CCSM must start becoming an expert at catching bass just over the limit and go from there. That sounds like a good starting spot to me.

Heck CCSM sounds like me and my partner! That guy can tell me by looking at the fish and he will usually be reallly close. Of coarse like the man said I specialize in short fish anyway!1emoSmile Like Jmax I sometimes use the "buddy" and yes it works!. I have had my butt kicked by one many times.
