Right now is a great time for night fishing. I have a light by my dock and this year's shad are about an inch long already. There is a huge swarm of shad every night I leave the light on and underneath the swarm there are bluegills crappies and stripe. I haven't caught any catfish or bass yet under my light but they usually are there, you just have to use something bigger than a one inch minnow to catch them. You can use a dip net with a fine mesh to dip up as many shad as you want then put them on a fine wire hook and split shot up the line, drop them to the bottom and bring them off the bottom one crank and you get bit almost every time. It usually takes an hour or two to get a good concentration below the light but for kids(big or small) it's a great time.
