I think you will find my writing to be real similar to my fishing... poor and sloppy, but here goes. I didnt get to the lake until about 7 this morning and after reading some of your reports thought I would go try some top water with a white buzz bait. I went over to bear trace and fished some of the grass beds toward the bank and only had one bite (very close to the boat) and it was a monster. If im not mistaken the water level has dropped in the last couple nights. Im not too sure if this had any effect on the top water hit or not but I hope it did and its not me. I finally conceated defeat and went across the lake to a long deep point/flat where from a distance it looked like someone throwing hand fulls of gravel in the water. Ive never seen so many fish busting the top and running minnows. I pulled out a lighter rod/reel and threw a white (I htink its called ICE) super fluke. They could not resist and almost every catch I caught one about 1#. I did catch one keeper and with the lighter tackle it was a good time. I tried casting a red plum Ol' Monster to no avail, I really couldnt resist throwing at the small fish knowing I was going to at least catch fish. Oh well, It just porves that I have a ton of learning to do! Had I not seen those busting the top who knows if I would have gotten another bite!

While I agree with what you did, if you would have fished a lure that would have gotten below the schoolers, you might have picked up some bigger fish. Big bass are lazy in nature, and they will not work for food, unless it comes to the point that they absolutely have to. Since the smaller bass are more active and will bust shad like that, the bigger ones will rest below the smaller bass, and will get the vittles that filter through the feeding frenzy, and they get a free meal.

Still sounds like you had a great time. ;)

Ditto! and yes the water has gone down a bit since Sunday and that almost always backs fish off and slows a TW bite. Cast accross the busting fish with that Ol monster and let it sink to the bottom and slowly work it back, that should work!

I would think you're late arrival had something to do with missing the top water bit.... I bet you did have a blast catching the fish in the jumps.... always fun... over the grass use a frog looking bait... your best bet....emoScratch emoGeezer

Thank you for all the tips. I am a beginner but am eaten up with it. If nothing else it was the best "looking" morning I have been able to fish this year. Its tough fishing the open water on the channel in my bass tracker, i finally picked a morning where the weather man was right and there was no wind. Any other tips would be appreciated.
