I've never caught a Drum, but I see you guys catching them all the time accidentally. Some of them are pretty large and might be fun to catch, especially if they are easy to catch.

If I wanted to fish specifically for drum, how would I do it? Equipment, location, time, etc.

Thanks

The best way to catch a drum is to enter a bass tourney, struggle all day trying to find a "kicker" fish, make that last catch with 15 minutes left, then hook into what you think will be the tourney winner/lake record bass.... you'll have your drum on the line.emoBang

Go below Nickajack Dam right now!!! Best time is daylight. If you know how, catch some of threadfin shad that are plentiful there (with a cast net or even wire dip net). If not take some shiners, nightcrawlers or darn near any other bait you can think of. Just chunk it out on the bottom anywhere around the short wing wall... If turbines are running, fish the eddies betwen current and slack water. If you don't catch a bunch of drum between 5 and 20 lbs., I'll be surprised! emoEek

Yep. I average one per trip. Just throw a black/blue jig on the rip rap and you will catch one.

I agree that Nick dam is the place to go. I have been trying all spring to get a 20+lber and I lost the only one I stuck. I know they catch 20+ lber below Nick all the time. I think the world record came below the dam. Probably the drum capital of the world.

If you want to catch drum...Big drum meet me at Chickamauga Dam on the downriver turbine side. There is a wingwall with a rail on it about sixteen feet long and slopes into the water. You can fish from that wall. You can use a hair jig or grub any shade and color as long as it is GREEN or a wad of redworms. Use a sinker only heavy enough to keep your bait down or add split shots to your line near your jig.. You must keep your bait right against the concrete wall and drop it down approximately 15' or more. Slowly pump your rod up and down to cause your bait to mimic a crawfish crawling up and down the wall. I was there about two weeks ago. All I can tell you is to hang onto your rod. If you want to meet me there give me a PM. I am sooo ready to go back.

Excellent, thank you everyone! Liveliner I might take you up on that in a couple of weeks.
The family wants to camp and/or fish this weekend and we're trying to get one of those floating cabins at hales bar (no one will call us back though), so I might try for a few drum below the dam this weekend.

Again, thanks! I love this forum!!
