I met up with fishing machine and we headed out in search of a boat load of crappie. It took a little bit to find the numbers we were looking for, but we finally did load the boat. Our first few stops were slow and just a few fish here and there. Our last stop was like winning the crappie lottery!! emoDance We pretty much stayed inside Island Cove, but just moved around a little. Around 8 or so we moved to a rip rap bank and that's where we stayed until 10:30. I used all sorts of color variations of tubes and probably the most consistant color for myself was orange/charteuse(sp?) . Fishing Machine was using mostly twisty tail grubs (not sure what his favorite color was). The totals for the night were right around 65 crappie ( three quarters of them were keepers),very few small ones. Not to mention the countless numbers of bluegill, and yellow bass. It was definately a great night, even when the wind was howling at us. I had a great time and hopefully we can get out again soon!! emoToast On a side note, all crappie were released to be caught another day!!emoFish

I'm glad you guys got into the fish over there. That is a hot cove this time of year. It's also a popular place to fish. Sometimes you have to take a number and get in line to fish that bank. emoGeezer

Pretty much had the place to ourselves lastnight. Once the light went away the crappie really turned on. They were really shallow too. Between 2-5 feet, with a few coming in deeper water. I would say the average size crappie we caught were around 12 inces.

It was good to get out after those crappie again and it's always good when you can catch a boat load.emoBigsmile This is the first time I've got to fish with fishinvol and enjoyed it very much. Not only did I enjoy the fishing, I also enjoy his company and finding out about his wife and Maddie.
I did use a twister tail most of the night and color wasn't important as long as it was charteuse. The wind made it tough to fish these little 1/32 jig heads but we did OK. Drumking, I'm still using the dye and the color I did the best with was orange/charteuse ( twister ) I'm going to learn about this crappie fishing ( not only in the spring when anyone can catch them ) I want you to teach me how to catch ( find ) them when they move out to deep water. I don't know of anyone that does it better.

Sounds like you guys had a great night! I wish that I had known that it was you guys out there last night I would have gotten over there to say hi. It looked like you guys were slaying them. FM, you are right about DK, nobody does it better on the crappies. What I want to know is how he is going to figure out the summertime crappie bite. I think that he usually stops fishing crappies in the summer. Will you try to stay on the fish this summer DK just to prove that you can? It's my impression that after the spawn crappies become harder to find because they suspend and follow bait balls all summer so they might be one place one day and far away the next. Is that your impression too?

I did some of it last year, Polo. I caught fish from late May until July/August. I could have fished more for them, but I took time out to catfish a little bit. I'll will try to do both this year. It will be hard to do, because I almost never fish over 4 hours per day and certainly not in the hot/humid summertime.

Fishing Machine, I will be glad to take you and show you what little bit that I know about how to fish for crappie. I'm not the best at it despite what you may think. I just have some radical ideas and am not afraid to try them. Most work, some don't, but that's the fun of trying to figure out this game called fishing. I am a good coach. If you had been with me this week, I promise you that you could catch them about anytime that you want. Let me state again, something that I firmly believe about the crappie bite. Most of the strikes are visual and if you are waiting to feel the thump you are waiting far too long to set the hook. My theory as I have stated more than once before is that when you feel the thump of a crappie it is when he/she is trying to expel it from their mouth. A theory is just a supposition based on ignornance of the subject matter. emoBigsmile emoGeezer

You're right DK, I caught a lot of fish last night but I missed a lot too. I would pull back and they were gone. It was a little tougher because of the strong wind at times, but fishing those grubs without a float was a little different. ( your right, you get a lot more hits without one )
Hey guys, this can get addictedemoFish emoFish emoFish
