Fished the tailwaters of Nick-A-Jack dam Saturday and Sunday. Saturday report first, caught about 10 or 12 fish with a smallmouth and spotted bass being the two heaviest. I will attach a photo. Those of you who read this report will gawk at the belly on the spot. Sunday morning caught about 25 bass with two giant small mouth weighing 5lbs 13oz and the other weighing 5lbs and 14oz. And on top of that I have possibly caught the new state record spotted bass of 5lbs. 12oz. I had the fish certified at a local grocery store and and Mike Baily with TWRA is going to take the fish to the state biologist on Wedneday for proper identification. Which all state records are required to be properly identified by the state biologist now. I am still using live bait that I catch with a cast net which we stripper fishermen call yellow tails and just floating them around the dam.

Awesome catch, BFG. Were you fishing out in the current or in the slack water around the flood gates & lock? Were they on the bottom or suspended along walls?

Here are the pics Captain Berry sent me - Congrats on the catch!!!

I'm just drifting them around the walls. I cant tell if they are suspended. Usually if I catch one there will be several more to come off a seam of concrete so I'm just drifting the bait back in forth in front of them. If I catch a fish I'll throw back and let the bait smim or drift back through same spot and most of the time catch another fish.

Do you free-line them or how do you rig? Hope the spot takes the record! PM me your rates, I'd love to put together a trip with you when I can set some funds back.

We also cast net the yellow tails at Nickajack but we find them hard to get until april. what size net do you thow? Do get them around the wingwall, floodgates, trashgate, or down the lockwall? I have a 10 and a 12 ft. diameter net so if you get out in the open I may have to get a bigger net. CONGRATS ON THE SPOT! Thank you for any info on the whereabouts of the March yellowtails. See you on the water.emoScratch
