Hey guys, I have only had some Wal-Mart cheap combos and am now wanting to upgrade to a little bit better equipment. I don't want to make this the typical tell me what to buy thread so please bear with me. I've looked at the Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 rods the most recently. Given this, I think I have finally settled on what line up of rods to purchase from. I'm wanting to get a couple of general purpose rods to start with. I will probably be mostly fishing for panfish and bass with these rods. Eventually, I will come on here to get some recommendations on rods to handle some bigger fish such as Muskie and Walleye. Anyway, I'm looking at the spinning versions and would like to get some information. I'm not sure what rods from the lineup would be best used for what technique? Could someone shed some light? Also, if any of you use these rods, what spinning reels work well with the rod?

Last but not least... If you do have other recommendations thatare good at the same price point, don't hesitate to say so.If I need to provide more info, just let me know.

Thanks! emoAngler

Veritas are good rods, but I've had bad luck with guides popping out of their socket or breaking. I've seen this with a couple of my buddies Veritas rods as well. I think the bottom three guides on all of them are reinforced, I've never had trouble with those, but the rest are not reinforced and they will eventually come out of their place after a decent amount of use. They're great rods other than the deal with the guides.

Personally, my favorite rods are John Miles rods. They'll run you $50 more but you definitely get your money's worth out of them. I only have three so far. Got my first one two years ago. Haven't had any issues with one yet. My favorite thing about them is they're built with graphite handles, which is supposed to give you a better feel, compared to other handles such as a wooden handle. The sensitivity is incredible. All of the guides are reinforced and of course, it's a pretty rod. On top of that, they all come with limited lifetime warranty. Just a suggestion if you're willing to spend an extra $50.

Either way, I would think a 6'6" medium heavy with a fast tip would be a good choice. This way you have some decent back bone in the rod for when it will be used for bass. This length and action rod should work for both species with fairly light weight to medium weight tackle. Hope this helps and good luck!
