This video is of commercial fishing boats returning from fishing off the coast of Washington and Oregon . They are crossing the Columbia Bar, which is where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean .

This is designated as one of the most dangerous ports of entry anywhere in the world. There are at least eight to 10 deaths per year with people trying to get in or out in boats that are not made for this kind of severe beating – the kind you see these boats going through.

These boats are self-righting, have a super low center of gravity, sealed engine compartments, basically bullet proof glass windows, double steel hulls. Well, you get the idea.

They are commercial shrimp and fishing boats. The Coast Guard has closed it due to waves of 35 to 45 feet. It is quite a sight to see. Watch the U-tube video and tell me if you would like to have been a crew member on either of these two vessels.

Columbia River bar – let’s go fishing. ! No Thank you very much!

With that accent I'd say that's somewhere besides the US lol Pretty sure that is the Grey river bar in New Zealand.

My gosh! I was a nervous wreck just watching that. No shrimp haul is worth that ride for me.

Reminds me of my days in the Coast Guard. The 180 foot buoy tender I was stationed on went on a rescue mission off cape Hatteras one time when the waves were 40 feet high. It was during a strong "noreaster" and the target was a freighter that had lost her screw (prop). When we arrived on the scene, a U. S. Navy destroyer was standing by, just is case. I could see the sonar gear on that destroyer when she came over one of those big waves and took a nose dive down the back side.

In the video, the guy on the weather deck had to be crazy. Except to save someone's life, I cannot see any reason to go out on the weather deck in those conditions. Any decent ocean going vessel has strong watertight integrity just for conditions like these. One or two rides like that will let you know if you are a real sailor or not.

There is no way to practice for that- just go and do it. What tx did you say they were fishing? All tx should start like that and anyone that survives is the winner. emoHoppingmad
