so i'm going up to michigan for the fourth of july. I'm going to be doing to fishing while im up there. im hoping to get some northern species. so my question to any of you guys who have any experience is:

1) That time of year what what should i being going for? walleye, pike, king salmon, etc...
2) What kind of gear should i carry? spinning, baitcaster? what size, type of line should i have spooled? space is going to be limited in the car and its going to be hard explaining y i need 8 rods for maybe 2 days of fishing.
3) lures and/or bait?

i don't know if i'll get out on a boat yet or not yet. so i may be bank fishing.

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks and have a nice day!

I have some experience fishing in Mich in the summer as my in-laws live there. What part of Mich will you be in? What would you like to fish for? What gear do you have? It all factors in. I know the lake Mich, or western Mich side more so than the eastern Mich side. Give me more info and I'll let you know what I know about it.

well ill be in central Michigan but my main fishing attempt will be up farther north around the bear lake area, my girlfriends aunt and uncle has a campground up there. im not real picky about what i wanna fish for, but preferibly something that we don't have around here. im leaning towards walleye.

as far as my gear i've got: UL spinning 4lb mono, L Spincast 8 lb mono, ML spinning 10lb floro, M baitcaster 20lb braid, MH spinning 14lb mono, MH spincast 17lb mono. ive got my eye on another baitcaster but i don't know yet...we'll see

I'd PM Nickajack Angler... he has spent some time in that general area.  He's also very knowledgable and should be able to help!

Your gear will work fine. Try to fish for the walleye dawn or dusk using lead head jigs (in bright colors) tipped with earthworms preferable a couple days before to a couple days after the full moon. Once you locate them, you can use curly tail grubs, minnow shaped cranks, or even dropshot gear. Bites tend to be light so be a line watcher.

Mid-day try trolling spinner rigs (see http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?type=pod&id=0023881 for examples) or crankbaits (round and minnow shape) in open water areas near the weedline or flat breaks (especially if rocks are nearby). With cranks you may end getting a few Northerns, if you start break line, add a steel leader.

Wow! Thanks for the compliment Brandon. I guess now, I have to respond with some tips.... although I fished MN, WI, Canada. But MI has the same species. Get to the great lakes and throw plastics for smallies or plugs for walleyes.... big ones. Shaky heads, senkos and bitsy jigs with trailers are best for smallies. But my secret lure up there was the original rapala in 4in, shad color. Buy one before you go, you won't find a shad colored rapala 800 mi from the midwest!!! LOL
If you are going Walleye fishing, just take the same spinning rod you use for bass and use anywhere from 8lb to 12lb mono. Use VERY small jigs for the walleyes, but rigging up some slip bobbers with the string to stop is best from shore, yes live bait rigs. You'll be hard pressed to catch walleyes with artificial unless you've done it for years and/or have a boat. For bait use LEECHES and take a small cooler, they die quickly in heat, but can live days in a cooler. Yes, you'll be able to find them, if not, use minnows or nightcrawlers. In that order. Lindy rigs are also a good option for walleyes from shore. They are prerigged and a staple rig up there. You'll also catch all species on that rig.
Also, a rapala (Shad color) medium diver works well. We went to Lake Erie to see an uncle and all we did is ride around on idle in his ski boat with rapala's thrown out and caught trophy walleyes and smallmouth just using this bait. And I do mean BIG ones.
This all can be done from shore or a boat. Look for breaks on points or humps. Usually rocks or edges of mudflats work best - any transition - they come shallow to feed in the AM and PM. You can catch walleyes in the middle of the day, but you'll need a boat and some damn good electronics.... or a knowledgeable partner. Go at first light and late in the afternoon, say 6pm to about 2 hrs past dark. Walleyes have about a 4 hr window of opportunity each AM and PM.
If you fish a river, use black hair jigs tipped with a minnow or leech and hop it along the bottom. Walleyes and smallies love leeches as well as do any species. Get jumbos. The bigger the better.

Otherwise, go and fish for bass just as you do here! They have some great bassin' up there, especially if you have a lake to fish. But watch out for the northern pike and muskies. They have TEETH and SIZE, so if you get a top water bite, spinnerbait or rattletrap you may want to use a 4 in steel leader. You'll figure that out after you lose a few lures/baits.
I have no idea what to use for salmon and if you go salmon fishing, you'll need a whole other set of gear, downriggers and stuff that us TN boys just don't have, unless you have saltwater gear. I would suggest making up your mind to either fish the lake that you have suggested for LM, SM, northerns and walleye... there probably are good crappie fishing there too, or go salmon fishing. One or the other. It's hard not to get over zealous in your hopes of fishing. Take one baitcaster and one spinning, your tackle box and give it a ride. The only two worm colors I used in the last 15 yrs up there was Pumpkin and Tequila Sunrise, Powerworm, 7in ribbontail. Everything else was a waste of time. My .02

thanks guys!!! sounds great to me! so i have the gear settled. im going to take 2 rods for me and 1 "for my girlfriend to use"emoEvil leeches eh? thats a new one on me but im gonna give it a whirl!

if anybody else has ideas don't be afraid just b/c nickajack wrote the book on walleye.emoEvil

I recently moved here from Michigan and i've got to say it all depends on what part your going to. I would def. hit Lake Michigan if your around that area but if you get closer to Lansing/Clinton County i'd try out Crystal Lake. It's got alot of boat and jet ski traffic but there is ALOT of shoreline to fish from, just make sure your on the north side, alot of kids swim on the south side by the beach area. Oh and Pike FTW emoHungry
