I hit the water early this morning using my dad's boat in search of a couple things. First thing, find a few bass to bite. I accomplished that quickly. 2nd goal, find a good place to catch crappie without a thousand other fisherman all around me. Thanks to a pm from drumking lastnight, I was able to get an idea were I wanted to try. My dad was meeting me at the ramp around 12:30 so I had plenty of time to find him some crappie. Of course he likes to use live minners (I just use lures). Well we loaded the boat! At first I noticed the crappie were kinda scattered, not all schooled up. That is until I found a little spot where they were packed tight! In 2 hours we had 17 in the livewell and threw the rest back. A total amount caught was right at 50 with 29 keepers. Also caught 10 bluegill, 1 shellcracker,5 shiners, 4 sunfish. As for my bass fishing in the early morning, I caught 11 largemouth and 0 keepers.:(
For the record I was using a tube jig with 1/32oz jighead. The tube colors I caught fish on were orange/black/chartues,sparkly blue/chartues, and red/pink/white. The tube won the battl of baits today. With out a doubt the orange/black/chartuese was the best of all the colors. Water temp. was between 60 and 66 degrees. I saw drumking walking to his boat this morning getting ready to head out. I waved,he didn't recognize me. Probably thought I was some moron waving at him.emoLaugh Had a good time catching fish with my dad and getting a great start to my farmers tan!!!!

Fishinvol... looks like you had some good eatin' tonight

I cant wait until the water comes up and we can hit our slough.  It is almost like cheat fishing for a couple of weeks down there.

Hey Chris. I didn't see you wave this morning. I was so focused on getting on the water and getting out of the next boat in line to launch that I wouldn't have seen a grizzly standing on the ramp. emoBigsmile I arrived there a little before 7:30 and the parking lot was already half full. Where did all these people come from. Did they launch around 4 or 5? It was just barely light when I got there.

I'm glad that your dad finally got onto some good crappie fishing. Were you on the north or south side? emoGeezer

We actually caught almost everything on the bank heading into the north side. We just kind of let the wind (what little there was) carry us down the bank until I marked some fish with the finder. It was a fun day for sure!emoThumbsup

Actually I left all the crappie with my parents. I rarely eat fish. It's not that I don't like it, I'm just not about to clean those suckers.emoVomit

After I got my limit there this morning, I went to another area of the lake and played with side scanning for crappie. What I did was turn the transducer on my trolling motor 90 degrees so that it pointed in the same direction that I would be trolling and voila. Instant side scanning unit. It worked to perfection. I found another large school of crappie and I only caught a couple since I already had a limit and was culling. Thought that I would save them for another day. I never would have known these fish were where they were without side scanning. These were the kind of fish that Rsimms and Dhaun catch while trolling aimlessly through the water column. Please, don't anyone get offended at my joking. I'm only serious about the reports.emoBigsmile

I actually used the side scanning on the fishfinder today and it helped catch a few more. I need to get better at reeding it though.

That's a great idea and a generous tip DK - I'll have to see if I can rotate my TM transducer like that next time I want to catch more keepers. Then I'll know which direction to troll emoBigsmile emoThumbsup

That's what I've been saying all along. They are right there for the taking if you could only know which way to cast. As they move, you can follow them
That is a great idea mounting the down transducer sideways. But (hee-hee) mine looks out both sides at the same time... Enjoyable thread. Thanks guys.

David, it works really great. Since my 565 hummingbird can't be trusted in shallow or very deep water, lies about depth, but shows everything perfectly, I just finally thought about turning the transducer that way last night and it worked great today. I use the Eagle on the console to check for accurate depth and now I have a side scanner for the trolling motor. And I didn't have to spend any more money. How sweet it is.emoThumbsup emoGeezer emoDance
