Fly Rod Rob, Shoshone River Wyoming & Bighorn River Montana, Rainbow, Brook & Brown Trout (plus a fe

I went out west to fish Wyoming and Montana. I had a wonderful time and the scenery was absolutely gorgeous!!! The temperatures were warm (98 was the highest we experienced) but the evenings were pleasant and the mornings were cool (low 50's).
We fished the Shoshone River for 2 days and caught Cutthroat and Rainbow trout (and a few mountain whitefish). The river is a freestone (no dam, a natural river) so all the water was from mountain snow melt. The average water temperature was 40-42 degrees.

The next day we went to a mountain meadow (at 9862 ft) to fish for brook trout in the Tongue River. Caught a few small Brookies and a few cutts but the mosquitoes were HUGE and the horse flies were eating us alive.

We then headed on to the Bighorn River in Montana. The water temperature was around 44-48 degrees. There was a HUGE hatch of Black Caddis flies and we caught the beginning of the Grasshopper season. We caught really big Rainbows and Browns using Pheasant Tail nymphs, Sowbugs and Sparkle Nymphs (all #18 - #20 hooks). We had a wonderful time.

Fly Rod Bob,
Good to hear you had a great trip. We leave after Labor day to head to the Tounge, then the Bighorn, then the Missouri, a day in Glacier, then back to the Bighorn on the way home. I hope there are some caddis left by then. The fish should really be looking at the hoppers by then. Did you fish the lower section of the Bighorn or stay up high? On the Tounge. I know what you mean about the black flies......bad! They will go away in another few weeks. Are you sure you were catching brookies......or cutthroats up there? That is one neat place. Did you see many people up there? We hope to hit it on the way back home again too.

We caught a few cutts but we were in the high meadow and got into a pod of brookies (less than 6 inches long). They were still fun to catch but you are totally correct on the black flies. I think the deep woods off we were using was a fly attractant rather than repelant. We got ate up...bad.

We got into some good fish on the Clark's Fork too. We got checked for WY fishing licenses twice in three days. The second ranger who checked us had a .45 on his hip and bear spray. He said "the .45 would just make a bear mad, so it was for people...thus the bear spray."

When we were at the airport flying home Thursday, 3 people were attacked by a bear and I belive one was killed. We had bear spray with us at all times. Better safe than eaten...

We did really well on the Bighorn from 3 mile down to 10 mile. Not much action above 3 mile early, but the hopper action happens above 3 mile in the afternoon. We had a few hopper takes below 3 mile but it is much better above in the late afternoon. We were already down river normally. Better get some 3X tippet as those fish are BIG and STRONG!!! Broke off several in fast water with 4X and 5X.

Good pictures Rob, glad you had a good trip and made it home safely. We thought about you this week when the bear attacks broke the news.

Your pictures are good and will keep me jacked up until we leave to go out. Speaking of bears, that first trip I took to the Tounge years ago, well, a buddy of mine was wading with me one morning. We were taking turn about, fishing the tight bends when I turned to say something to him and about forty to fifty yards behind us emerged a black bear, out of that willow thicket that borders the creek. He never slowed down though, running hard, up through the parking lot, across the highway and up that long mountain grade, out of sight. That will get your heart pumping. I've had encounters with moose in that thicket as well.
