I have been reading about sugar beets for deer plots. Just wondering if anyone has planted any and did the deer seem to eat them as fast as they whould oats and winter wheat. I am thinking about trying some this year and mixing them in with oats, wheat, turnips. what do you guys think.

I have never tried them but a friend did he was from up north and said they hit them hard their but when he planted them here they didnt hit them at all but if you try let us know how they do

I have raised sugar beets in my garden at home to test and see how they grew and of deer would eat them.(deer blaze my garden every year). My observation is that they grow slow and don't have a lot of vegetation. Also, the deer plowed through everythingincluding the carrots next to the beets, but left the beets alone...you may have different luck. Let us know how it goes, good luck!

I planted some a couple of years ago and did not have much luck with them growing. I have planted Rape, Turnup Greens, Mustard greens and Kale at different times in my plots, The best i have found is the Turnup Greens for Deer. The greens out performed Buckforage oat and wheat for a deer attractant. I plant about 10 acers of food plot every year in Western Kentucky. The Deer really hit the greens after a hard frost when the sugar comes up in the greens. Plant them thick enough that you get a really thick stand that way they will last till around Christmas or longer. Last year at Christmas we had deer still hitting the greens and pulling up the turnup and eating them as well. If i only had one thing to plant for a fall plot it would be turnup greens really thick so the deer would be there all season.
