I guess I am just old fashion. My age is showing. I remember the days that if someone could not fix your car you were not charged for it. emoGeezer Some of you all may already know this type of issue but for those of you who do not let me tell you a little story.

My son's truck which we have had for a few months (bought it used) is up in Cookeville where he goes to college, it started smoking and not running well. It had very little power upon pushing the gas. He called me all upset wanting to know what to do. Since I know no one up there who works on cars I told him to just take it to the Ford place and let them take a look at it. They told him right off it would be 89.00 for a service charge just to tell what was wrong with it. emoRolleyes O.K., I can understand that one. I then received a call from them (Karen) explaining that the problem was the #3 cylinder that was the problem however she could go no further until I gave her permission to remove the valve cover. I asked,"Then what?" She told me that this truck had issues with the valve springs and it was probably that. To replace the spring would be close to $500.00.!!!! "O.K." I said..."So if it is not that, what then." She told me then once the valve cover is removed and we have it apart we can then determine what needs fixed and fix it since we will then be able to see what it is. I told her I did not want to pay a whole lot to do this if that was not the issue but that made sense to me so go ahead.

The next day I received a call telling me that the valve cover had been removed but it was not the spring. Several other tests were done and they then discovered that the piston had a hole in it. emoDoh I asked her now that she could see it how much would that be? She informed me she does not fix that kind of problem there. emoScratch She then suggested I replace the engine completely but since it was a 2001 that she did not know if I wanted to sink that much money into that old a truck. emoHoppingmad I asked her for a ball park figure as to the price of an engine and she told me the cost would be about $3,500.00!!!!! I told her there was no way I was going to pay that much to have it fixed and even asked if they did not do ring jobs and piston kits??? Nope, we don't do that here. I told her that I was coming to get it and to not do anything else. I went there to pick up the truck and they charged me $424.11 to pretty much do nothing but tell me they could not fix it!!! emoHoppingmad emoAngry I expressed my dismay of how much I was paying to them just to tell me they could not fix it. That to me is insane.

I got the truck and took it to Hyde's where Allen told me what was wrong with it and he did not even have to do all that. emoRolleyes Stuck some kind of little camera down the spark plug hole and saw the issue.

Now the rest of the story.....

I was pretty upset that the information that they did not do that work there was not told to me up front and the truck was not fixed in any way but yet they charged me $424.11 to just tell me that. I sent a letter to the main Ford company explaining this whole event and they sent back a letter telling me that the Ford Lincoln dealership of Cookeville TN was an independent dealer and they could not control any cost or fees they charge. They then told me they would forward my letter to them. Yesterday I get a customer service letter from Ford in Cookville asking me how satisfied I was with my service and to be expecting a letter from the main office asking for a rating!!!! emoDoh Are you kidding me!!! How satisfied I was that they charged me $424.11 just to tell me they did not fix that there!!!!

There was a number to call if I had issues or concerns on that letter....so I called it. Talked to a Zane Presley who after telling him about everything up above took off trying to justify the price and that they have to charge $88.00 per hour service even if nothing is fixed. I told him if that had been explained that way and if they had said in any way that if there was a problem with the piston or block they do not do that there but would still charge me $424.11 I would have never had them do it. emoMad That was and still is my complaint and issue.

I explained to him I do alarms and if I told someone we would come out and put in an alarm, sent a crew and once we got there found out we could not do it but they still owed me for it what would he think of that? It is pretty much the same thing. We spent labor, sent the crew, had expenses we had to cover. If he was the customer would he pay it? He changed the subject. emoTskTsk He is going to look into the charges and see if any of it could be reduced and refunded. We will see if I hear back from him and what happens.

I say all this just to warn everyone of this kind of junk and how they will charge you and still not fix a thing. Then they try to get you to pay $3,500.00 for an engine and no telling how much labor that would cost to be put in. I will say it again, that is insane. I feel pretty much lied to and misled. If at any time this kind of information had been told to me I would have gone and gotten it which ended up being what I had to do in the end. But I am $424.11 more poor. emoCrazy Jmax

That's crazy, you can get an engine for that truck for A LOT less than that! Sounds like the Freightliner dealer in Chatt, went through a similar situation with them about one of our Sprinters. I hate crooked dealerships/mechanics.

Derek, I started looking up prices on that engine and got a lot better price quotes. Once Allen Hyde got hold of it he kept me very much informed. I threw myself on his good nature and asked for a fisherman's discount. emoAngel

He told me that not only was the piston with a hole but the cylinder itself was damaged probably from the wore out piston that had the hole. He told me he could fix all that by replacing the piston and rings but then the cylinder would have to be repaired as well in the lower block. He highly recommended a new engine as well even thou the damage of #3 could be fix for less. However he added you had 5 other cylinders that could go bad. emoDoh He told me to find the best price I could on an engine and to call him back with it. I did that, he called his distributor who said they would match it. Allen is going to give me a fisherman's discount and it will be a huge amount less then I would have ever paid at the Ford dealer. Even with their $424.11 I will pay less then they would have charged me to replace it. 3 year warranty on all parts and labor or 100,000 miles whichever comes first.

I highly recommend Allen and his son over at Hyde's automotive's, not to mention you can talk about fishing while you are there. emoBigsmile Jmax

JMAX, just curious to know that isn't the 5.4 liter V8 is it? I've had a couple friends that have FORDS that are having the same type problems and had to get new engines. Just curious. I've always heard great things about hydes.

No, this is a used little Ranger truck with a v6 in it that I bought for my son to go to college in and use up at Cookeville. I had hoped it would at least last until he got out of school but it did not even last a year before I am sinking money in it. I hope with a new engine this should stop. At least I have the peace of mind knowing it is covered for three years or 100 k. emoAngel Going to have a truck I paid around 6 grand for worth about 10 grand when this is all over. It better last a while cause I will never get my money back. emoBang Jmax

Had a similiar problem with my F150 and warranty work (Ford deal no longer in business. go figure!). The "limited slip" rear end started to knock with too much play. They had to take it apart (including all of the brake assemblys, shoes, etc..), pull out the axles and re-shim the differential. I asked them to give me a cost for a brake job at the same time, figuring everything was already apart, be easy. They qouted me the full manhours, about $400. I told them it's already all apart! I ended up re-shimming the differentials and doing the brakes myself. The whole thing cost me less than $130 and I was back running within a few hours, minus turning the drums. Un-real...and my wife was a sales manager at Ford. She told me they can't qoute "partial" hours on thier "system". Horse Crap!

I hear ya, I think they are set up to take advantage of you. I use to take my wife's Toyota to the dealer on Lee for her oil changes. I noticed no matter when or what I did they always came up with some other thing that needed fixed or done. Every time it seemed it was around $200 for it and the oil change!!!! emoAngry One day I came early and just stoud around the counter there where they deal with all the people who have to pay. It appeared everyone got that same advice or information. emoScratch I thought it was strange that almost all the customers they had ended up with something else needing fixed. Does that not sound strange to you? Then I saw on 60 Minutes how some places did that all the time and in some cases it was not necessary. They did it only to make an extra buck. Now don't get me wrong, those items they told me and the other customers may very well have needed done and 60 Minutes did not go to their dealership. But, I stopped taking my wife's Toyota there and it still runs just fine. emoQuestion Jmax

Quit being a cheap ass and go buy a used Toyota Tacoma and you won't have to deal with stuff like this.

I don't make the kind of money you make anymore. You will know sooner then you think. Give it a few years when your three start to drive. Better start saving now. Then you can get them three Toyota Tacoma's and let's see who starts being cheap then. No more new boats every other year. Then college times three, one is a girl and trust me that becomes high end most of the time. I can only imagine how you are going to be. You may start fishing as much as me just to keep your sanity. emoAngel Jmax

My favorite one is when using a local nissan dealership they were talking to on older couple and told the they needed their in cabin filter replaced. They honestly quoted them at 65 dollar for one from nissan. The older man and his wife were talking and I butted in a told them you can get one for 20 at the auto parts store and would show them where it was behind the glovebox. Took them to the car in the showroom which was the same kind as theirs and showed them how to push this in and viola you have easy access. They will try and take you for anything.

thats why they call them stealerships . my wifes convertible top would not operate stealership said it was a limit switch in the top and it would cost 350.00 to fix found a brand new one on ebay for 19.00 fixed it myself . sorry about your engine troubles glad you found a good mechanic

Hope you get it taken care of. Had a friend that had a PU with the GMC gas-to-diesel crappy conversion. Had all kinds of trouble. Finally, GM sent a guy to completely disassemble the engine- found it had the wrong camshaft in it! I could fill a book with experiences and stories about cars, manufacturers, and problems.
To get an idea of the mark-up in parts, I had a '77 Ford LTD. The parts manager at the local dealer said someone had a lot of time on their hands. A car that cost $6200 sticker price would cost $40,000 by buying the parts over the counter!
