Is this a Lowrance Unit or a Bird. I've been looking at these units and I'm trying to decide the pro's and cons of each manufacturer. I was also wondering what most of you guys are buying the Low or Bird unit. Which is the best unit? B.A.S.S. Times is running a three part report on these units but I think it would be very beneficial to hear from you guys that are actually using them since the artical is not leaning towards either Mfg. I would really like to try one for a week or two just to see for myself how hard they are to use between menu and setup etc. Like the photo above I can't tell whats a fish and whats bottom. So how do you know that those are fish and not rocks on the bottom I'm looking at the shadows I guess that means its off the bottom and that it's fish correct.

Those are fish on the left. The shadows are what you looking for. You can see the shadows are seperated from the fish. If it was a rock or tree the shadow would continue from the base of the object out. The little slivers of white are the fish. Doug uses Humminbirds.

Doug knows these units inside out. You will here some say lowrance is best and some will say humminbird so here is my vote for humminbird.

I use Humminbird...I like some of the added features Humminbird offers like Side Imaging Enhance (the best fish finding tool), 50 Channel GPS Receiver with 4X Refresh Rate, Contour Mode and more

Another benefit to Humminbirds is the free software updates that they come out with. I did say FREE. Very happy with both of mine.

I've got a HB 798si I bought about 9 mo. ago. I am completely ignorant about getting the updates for the unit. What do I need to do. I've registered with Humminbird, but don't know what to do now.

Seems like the Bird is big in Chattanooga....What about the Lowrance Guys anybody out there echo.....echo...echo. I've heard from the Birds whats the best features on the Lowrance units. I'm a Lowrance guy I've owned 4 units and I'm looking to upgrade to the big unit...Seems like the bird is the way to go.

I have no idea about the new Lowrance units, but I have a lcx-27 on the front of my boat and still think it's one of the best units Lowrance ever put out. My 998 is still easier to use though. :)</p>

My buddy has the Lowrance units and he hired Rogne to take him out and go over them with him. He loves them.

I have two birds a 997 and 1198 and the pictures are great. The only problem I have is the format does not match the Long/Lat on the Atlantic Maps. Lowrance does but I think the customer service is better with the birds. Lowrance makes a good unit and these are my first Birds so far so good.</p>
