like to hunt em' hate to clean em' but love to eat em'. Maybe its me but I havnt seen as many frogs as usual emoScratch where are some good ponds/lakes to gig that might be on public land.emoHungry

I haven't seen quite as many yet either, of course it is still a little early. I've always done really well on golf course ponds, but its a good idea to get permission sometimes. Some golf courses have several ponds that will hold plenty of frogs, so if you can get permission on one course, you are pretty much set.

The Strip Mines on Suck Creek Mountain have some excellent frog gigging. Have to be real careful though some areas can be like quicksand.

Chattanooga Creek is an excellent area for frogs and just the right size for wading and gigging. Unfortunately it is so polluted you wouldn't dare do either.

I grew up gigging frogs and love them also. It's true there aren't as many frogs nowdays as pollution kills off tadpoles. I'd love to find a place to take my son gigging here in Georgia. But landowners aren't as generous as they were back in the '60s. There isn't any problem in cleaning them, lkolb. I'd be glad to give ya a hand on that chore if you could find a place we could gig that had plenty of large frogs!

ya know..we always shared with the land owner when we caught a mess of whatever..Whether we were fishing, hunting or gigging..even gathering berries.
I'm talking about back in the day when my uncle was teaching me the ropes. I'm gonna be handing this attitude down to my son and I can only hope it goes on.

Bye the way, I got best lights ya ever seen, helmet mounted(as I'm a caver), which leaves your hands free to spot fogs, snakes and see where you are on the water..Leaves your hands free to do the job! Believe me when I say these lights are bright..

dont know if its due to pestisides/chemicals but i never see many frogs on any courses around my way.

Some golf course ponds have some awesome largemouth populations, which is great for fishing but bad for gigging. Smaller ponds with little to no oxygen seem to be the best in my experience.
By the way incavenow, those headlamps are definately the way to go! We used to use spotlights and stuff like that, but the headlamps make it sooooo much easier. If you can hold them in your headlamp and get your partner to hold them with another light from a different angle, it works really well. I think that when the light is coming from differnet places they really get disoriented.

Instead of gigging, have any of you ever caught them with a strip of red ribbon on a hook? Works like a charm. Freeze them with the light, dangle the hook right in front of their face with the red ribbon attached and watch them grab it. Fun.
