Let me get your thoughts on this. Have a 96 18 ft stratos which came with a 96 150 Johnson. Went fishing and ran fine until it warmed up and I shut it down for awhile. Tried to restart and cranked fine and hit gas and bogged and died. Pumped primer bulb, started and ran fine until I shut down again for awhile. Same problem. Changed primer bulb. Same problem. Now, traded engines and put on 2009 150 Johnson. Two or three days later had the same problem. Replaced fuel line and primer bulb again, checked all connections for air leaks and found none. As I said, changed engines and had same problem so rules out the engine. Now my question is, the boat has a 40 gal onboard tank. Is there a fuel filter built in the pickup on the onboard tank? Like I said, it's a 96 stratos and I've pumped a few thousand gal in it over the years.

you might try asking at iboats.com forum - it's national and you will usually get 10 replies in about 10 minutes - great if your hands are still greasy and your mind still thinking on the problem. It's like having your own internet pit-crew.

Look for the Evinrude/ Johnson forum.

It may be the anti syphon valve on the tank. If pumping the bulb cures it, it is a fuel "draining" issue and the bulb (if a quality one) should have repaired it as well. There should not be a filter in the boat unless someome added it. Some of those are a real chore to get to the fuel tank. Just my .02

I would check the fuel tank vent. Sounds like it's pulling a vacuum inside the tank, and restricting flow out of the tank. The more fuel you have in the tank, the smaller the airspace, and quicker it'll build up vacuum, just for reference. Pumping the bulb overcomes the vacuum that the engine's fuel pump can't.

Do you have any trouble fueling? Any spitting back through the filler neck?

There should be a small strainer on the fuel pickup, but that doesn't sound like the problem.

And remember, this is my internet diagnosis only, I'm not responsible for any accidental fixes you may find!

Had the exact same problem on my Alumacraft with 70hp Johnson-both 2001 models. Turned out to be contamination in the fuel tank. Drained the tank with a pump, tilted the boat so all fuel would run to the back, attached rags to wires and swabbed out the tank. Cured the problem.

Try running engine on a small, remote tank with known good gas. If your problem goes away, then you know you have problems at the boat's tank and/or the gas line from the tank to the bulb.

Thanks for the feed back guys. I just got the time to check out a couple of things this morning. Brian, I do have a problem getting gas into it as it will spit it back in your face. I checked the tank vent thinking maybe I had found the problem. Nope. Vent is open to and from the tank. Couldn't get the vent line off the tank so just cut it in the middle and blew thru both ends. Will stick a hose barb in that. James, if there is an anti syphon valve on the tank it must be inside the tank. It's a straight run from the tank pick up to the primer bulb and then to the engine and it is a quality bulb, said Mercury Marine right on the box LOL. Maybe I do need to try a small remote tank as soon as I can find one and it's warms enough to get back on the water. I really do not want to pull a 40 gal tank out unless I really have to and I'm not sure if there is enough room to pull the fuel pick up if I don't.

The anti-syphon will look just like a barbed connector on the tank pickup. If you pull it out and look at it, you will see a a ball in it. I agree with the remote tank suggestion. I have seen several valves go bad. Just my .02

Sorry for the delayed response.......
