Went to gander mountain today and they have a very nice fishing dept. Its about as big as sportsmans with a better selection of line. They also have their own private label stuff.I got a gander elite rod that was very nice for $39 bucks. The gentleman working in the fishing dept. said that St. croix makes their rods for them! You could make a half day trip by dropping your wife off at the numerous outlet stores and then eating at one of the many restruants that we dont have here.

Sorry, we were on our way to Pigeon forge and it is right on the interstate on the right as you almost get to knoxville.

I went to Gander Mtn several weeks ago and was very disappointed. The store seemed dis-organized and not well stocked. Even a couple of the display reels were broken. Some of their store brand rods and reels looked pretty good for the price though. While Sportsman's Warehouse doesn't have a big variety (rods and reels), I think they do a better job. I guess I'm still a Cabelas and BPS man.

Where is Gander Mtn?

Knoxville at exit 373 on I -40 west of town. Great place for fishing stuff. No BPS but better than SW by far.

The only problem with Gander Mtn is there inventory is not controlled by the store, it is sent to them from corporate. That is why last year the store in Huntsville had a huge shipment of ice fishing rods come in about this time. They do have a good selection of Elk calls as well and unbelievably in stock..........Gander is better than nothing and what I have found is if they have what you are looking for, buy all of what ever it is you want, when it is gone it will be awhile before it is restocked.

It makes no sense that these large stores refuse to stock what is being sold the selection at sportsmans as far as fishing equip. has sucked lately

To us it doesn't make sense, but from a margin standpoint it works really well for the big stores. They get deals on inventories to move through there stores no matter if it is a gimmick bait or a tried and true bait. They make money on all of them. Even the ones in the clearance bins. What alot of people forget is for every 1 educated consumer there are atleast 3 or more uneducated consumers( I am not refering to education level, but product awareness). If a large corporation can sell to half of the uneducated consumers once at full price, it is hard for the educated consumer to repeat enough buisness to make up the 1.5 uneducated consumer or more.

I'd have to agree with ya Teamchatterbait. SW hasn't been the same for about 6 months. I used to go in there 3-6 days a week & spend atleast $20-$50 each trip. I've been haveing to drive to Cleavland or Soddy to get what I need for months, don't even hardly think of SW any more. I realize that the fishing dept. isn't the only one in the store. But many times I have wound up in other depts. spending $$$. I guess I must be one of those (as mallardecho calls it) Edjumacated consumers!
