I have inherited my Dad's old boat, and his headache this weekend. :) Don't worry, he is fine, he just doesn't have the time to work on it and his evil plan was to give it to me so I'll fix it and take him fishing.

Anyway, the last time we took it out we had it running decent. It was slow going, but it took us up river... When we got back to load it up, I put it in reverse to back away and it seemed like it jumped gear. We cranked her up on the trailer and took her home. When we got there I noticed the prop would spin freely in both directions, even when in gear. I thought it was a sheared pin. But I started playing with the adjusters and found that if I adjust it all the way out and put it into reverse, it'll lock into gear. I can't get it to lock in forward though. I know, I'll be pulling the lower half off. And since it's off, I'm going to change the water pump impeller. And I figure I should change the gear oil as well. But what should I expect to find in the gears?

Also, I want to have the carbs rebuilt. It's an old 70's model Evinrude 55 hp. Who is the most reasonable for rebuilding the carbs in the area?

Thanks for any help.

My clutch dog went out in my lower unit and it would spin freely. If you have to buy new grears or clutch dog put OMC ones back in it I have had bad results with after market ones. Just my .o2

pinion gear tore loose in mine omc 200 horsey had it rebuilt with all new gears done it again 11 months later went to heavy duty omc replacements. prop spins free when in gear either direction. be sure to check all gears forward rev.and clutch dog as mentioned in before post good luck

I had the clutch dogs and pinion gear go out on my 76 model johnson 55 once the pinion gear itself was 278 dollars i found a good used whole lower unit for 200 and the boat is still on the water today although owned by someone else now lol it might be something to look into if your gears are really bad
