Got to the woods just as it was getting light. Headed in and heard a couple of gobbles. Tried to move up the ridge to get above them but it was getting too light and I saw some hens fly down and move toward the gobblers. Tried to move up another 100yds - got about 50 and saw some hens headed out the ridge. Hit my slate call one time and heard running. Had just enough time to squat down and get my gun up and his head popped over the edge of the ridge. I pulled the trigger and he went down. As I was walking to him, 2 more identical toms came running in headed toward him flopping. 9-in beard / 1-in spurs / 21 1/4 lbs.
All in all - a quick but fun hunt. Left the house at 6:40 and was back at the truck with the bird before 8:00.
