MEndy and I are taking our annual trip, this time it is not to Jamaica, lack of funds and resort is being remodeled, it is to Kentucky Lake and anywhere else we decided we want to fish. THought about Cheatham but we don't know anything about either of them. If anyone can steer us in a good direction to take a fishing trip for about a week within TN., I will gladly listen.

If it is your first time on Kentucky Lake, I would just emphasize that it is BIG. This means that you can get some big water in a hurry, especially when the wind comes down from the north and is pushing against the current on the main channel. There are lots of good places from Leatherwood Creek south of Paris Landing State Park on US. 79 north to the Kentucky line. I have fished Leatherwood, Byrds, and Rushing Creek in years past, but mostly for crappie. A cousin of mine caught a largemouth just shy of 12 pounds in Byrds Creek several years ago.

Good luck.

I'd echo tennfisher. Look out for the wind and waves. It is classified as a shallow lake but since you will be fishing, keeping tabs on the depthfinder will not be a problem.

TW, do you have a map? There's tons of water out there at Ky. Lake. I would pick a couple of creeks near where you are staying and the main lake structures near by the creeks. I would mark up your maps whether they be on the web or in your hand and use a GPS or bouys to mark the best looking spots that look like they have fish and/or bait on them. I would have a new area to fish every day for the first half of your trip and plan to fish the most productive spots again on the last half of the trip. I can mark up some electronic maps for you if you would like. I just need the area that you plan to fish and an email address. We can find you some fish, I promise.

TW, I would check the US CORP website. Wasn't this the lake they were working on the dam and the water levels are very very low? I also suggest fishing Dale Hollow. Small mouth fishing is unbelievable.

We are staying at a place called Oak Haven something. Its only 55 a night and has a kitchen with your own boat slip with electricity. Its where 76 crosses the lake on the western shore. The owner of the place told us the water was down about a foot, but that is normal for this time of year.

okyou all, i am leaving monday morning so go ahead and tell me those great spots. also bass and vol i have decided to go to dale hollow for a few days as well, i really want to get on some of those smallies. I f you know of any locations please help me out. Thanks much, this site is so good

I am heading up that way on the 21st. I will be fishing up towards Blood River. You had best listen to the person who was telling you about how nasty KY. Lake can get. It's not really shallow but it is big and wide in some spots. There may be some early morning bites shallow even top water. If you see a spot that has fish popping the top and I don't mean exploding, throw a spook or other top water. Your bigger fish are probable going to be on the ledges. Try a swim bait , 3/4 oz or bigger football jig, deep diving crank bait or a guide I know uses a white buck tail jig.
If you go to Dale Hollow go prepared to night fish this time of year.

I think that the biggest reason why Ky lake gets such huge waves in it is that in that part of the country the mean wind velocity is much higher and that Ky lake is situated almost straight north/south. If the wind is out of the north or out of the south the waves get bigger and bigger as you move down wind. The land around Ky lake isn't nearly as hilly either so that the lake isn't sheilded from the wind either. The lakes around here have steeper banks and they don't run straight for any length, they weave north, south, east, and west so that the wind doesn't have a chance to blow straight down it's length for hundreds of miles. The water there in Ky lake can have swells upwards of 8 feet high just from the wind. Be careful.
