I took "Labor Day" off from laboring for either Channel 9 or the fishing biz. I joined some old friends for an early season goose hunt. (l-r) Stanley Walker, Fred Moudy, Charlie Duggan and his son Kyle. ((I'm in 2nd pic)

It was the first time all four of us "old guys" have been able to get together all at once for several years.

We go WAY back... Fred is the Old Man of the bunch, although not that much older. Fred took me duck hunting the first time in 1969, before I could drive myself. Not long afterwards my father suffered a debilitating stroke and Fred sort of became my second "Dad." I suppose Charlie and Stanley qualify as "brothers."

Today was expected to be just a leisurely hunt for old times sake without any great expectations... the geese had other ideas. Fourteen of 'em made the fatal mistake and hit the water for keeps today. Two of them were banded.

Great friends and great hunting... it doesn't get any better than that. Which is yet another reason that life is good and gettin' better everyday!

Does Goose breast catch catfish? LOL

I love to goose hunt.

It probably would... in fact I know it would. But right now I've got goose breast strips marinating in Teriyaki Sauce, getting ready to go on the grill just before game time. Yum Yum! emoHungry

Great job Richard, I didn't hear that much in the middle part of the lake this morning either, but it's nice to see some of them heading towards the oven.......... Did you see many woodies this morning?

I think we saw a grand total of two wood ducks. It is very sad too. The area we were hunting used to have so many wood ducks you couldn't stir 'em with a stick. Kind of baffling... we don't what has changed?

That a GREAT day!! We went yesterday too, saw a bunch, only killed 1. You need to stick that pic in your scrapbook for sure.

Looks like yall had a good hunt.. we had a field that they were hitting every morning for about the last month @ 7:15 and we got set up and here they came, made 2 passes and lite down the field about 150 yards... my luck!!!LOL

I've had that happen. emoBang One thing I learned was that geese that are field feeding will often pick a certain spot to hit in a field. Once on the ground, they might graze around the field... but they'll always come in an hit in one specific spot. And no matter how good the decoys or how good the calls, if you don't set up in the exact spot, you're gonna get your heart broke.

Not sure if that's what happened to you or not... but I've sure had it happen to me more than once. :(
