Hey yall, i just went last Saterday and got me a new 12Ga Mossberg Maverick pump shotgun with a 28" barrell. It is chambered for 2 3/4 and 3" shells. Im wantin to use it as a turkey gun. Im about to get me a full choke for it, but does anyone know where i might could possibly find an Extra Full choke for it? As i said im wantin to turkey hunt with it so im wantin the fullest choke that i can get, but i aint got that much cash to spend. It takes a Accu-Choke.

Turkey guns, chokes and shot are not easy to just grab-n-go. It takes lots of time and money to find the best combination. Just getting the tightest tube you can find will not gurantee a good pattern from the gun. Are you planning on shooting the cheapest lead shot you can find, or high end lead shot, or moving into high-density shot like Hevi-shot or Winchester extended range shells?

I'm sure Spur knows much more about this than me. He usually does. However I think too much emphasis today is put on this choke thing and not enough on the hunter thing. Case in point is A guy named Sammy Trammel. I grew up with his son down in the south end of Walker County Georgia. Sammy gets his limit of big longbeards every year and has for more than 40 years. Sammy shoots an old Remington 870 3" with a fixed full choke barrel. Most of today's turkey hunters would not even dream of shooting such an "outdated inferior" weapon. Sammy spends a lot of time in the woods. He knows how turkeys tick and how to call them in close enough that he does not need the 80 yard gun or the custom $8 a shot ammo to bag his game.
Get the best choke tube you can afford and spend the time in the woods to learn the turkey. JMHO

Congrats on the new shootin' iron. Nothing like a new gun.

I used the Kicks Gobblin Thunder .670 turkey choke in my mossberg 835 for years and it was a turkey takin' machine. I have taken probably a half dozen gobblers at 50+ yards with this set up, but I was using 3.5" magnums with 2.25oz of #5s. Cheez is right, a good choke is only part of the equation....good luck!

Try Academy Sports...they have a good seletion.
That is where i got the gun at. They didnt have a full choke or a good turkey choke for it. They had a skeet choke, improved, and a modified.

Im plannin on shooting a 3 inch shell with 2 oz. of shot in a #4. Cppper plated FEDERAl premium Magnum Turket Loads. I got the shells are ready. Do you think that it would pattern good with a full choke?

You dont know anything till you pull the trigger and see how it patterns. Most of the turkey I have shot have been in my lap so the pattern only mattered on the few birds that hung up....I promise it will do the job. I always say, It only takes one of those little bb's in the right place to put him down...

My dad says the same thing. I killed my first turkey last year and i was using my 20 gauge winchester 1300 with a modified choke and a 3inch shell and a number 4 shot and it did the job at abou 45 yards.

I may shoot it with a turkey load at about 40 yards and see how it paterns with this modified choke and if it gets about 4 bb's in the turkey head picture ill hunt with the modified choke. I have hunted the past 2 seasons with a 20 gauge and a modified choke and loved the way it patterned.

you might also want to try #5 shot as well as #4 and see which one shoots the best pattern out of your gun. I have a rem 870 with a xxx choke and the #5's gave the better pattern.

Like severial others have said get the best choke you can afford and run 4s,5s an 6s through it. I have a true glow in both my 870 and 935 mossburg . The 870 Shoot winchester number 5s in 2 once 3.5, mossberg shots 3inch federial in 1 7/8 ounce. Both these guns pattern great. You will kill more turkies with patients and staying in the woods than the most expensive choke tubes and tight patterns. Good luck and congrats on the new gun and welcome to the turkey hunting brotherhood.

I use a mossberg maverick 88 with an HS turkey choke I got at sportmans warehouse and shoot Winchester 3" 5shot and it holds a real nice pattern at 40 yards.
