I recently learned of coyotes in the Soddy Daisy area, we have 3 dogs (1 medium, 2 small). In the case of a yote poking its snout where it shouldn't what would be more effective, a .22 10/22 or a 12 gauge Mossberg 930?

If you should surprise the Coyote and you are actually set up and ready, Then you might get off a lucky shot. But you are going to have to be right on top of him/her. They will not allow you to get that close. If you have Coyotes that have set up residence near your property then I can well assure you that they already know more about the habits of both you and your animals than you do. Being as smart as they are is why they are flourishing even the inner city limits of Chattanooga including Coolidge Park.

Depending on your surrounding area I would recommend something that has a kill range of a minimum 100 yrds. I do Coyote and varmint control as a free service where they are a risk and/or danger to domestic farm animals and pets.. I have as the #1 gun a Ruger 77/22 bolt action 22 mag rifle with a Leopold 2.5 X 8 Scope capable of shooting a constant group inside a dime at 100 Yards. That is a fail-safe coyote Gun. In more open areas and at very long range I will use up to a tuned in 243 Remington.

BTW Coyotes have been in Soddy-Daisy for over Thirty years but we are now seeing a greater increase in all the Southeastern States. I study Coyotes and have attended mini-seminars. They are most likely "The" smartest animals in the country and are fine tuned to eliminate their competition for food. And that is your dog. Your cat is dinner.

Good points about these smart animals. Unless you're going to sit up all night with a rifle dialed in to the exact spot you thinki that yote is going to cross your yard, you may be better off trapping.
Snares on a trail where it crosses a barbed-wire fense is the easiest and safest way.
Baiting can be tricky and you risk a lot of non-target species.

You can try an electronic call or mouth call and try to entice one into range, but they're spooky and don't run flat, they hop and leap making a running shot almost impossible.
Good luck !

Extra dead chickens hung some in reach and most out of reach makes them show up that second evening for the ones that got away. All factors apply. You must be 100% undetected. The wind must be in your favor. Face east if possible to use all the sunlight. Calls work great if the Coyotes are skittish of the human scent you spread around the bait

I have heard of using treble hooks hung up high with bait. Have you tried that before? If so how did you set it up.

I have never done the treble hook thing. That is just too cruel for me. I do not shoot at them either. The difference is, I shoot them, Not at them... Same with Deer hunting.. I take great pride in a clean kill shot. One shot ...

smughal31 you are dead on with that .17

I agree 100% and yeah that .17 is the round to use on that type of game for sure. Well in my opinion

Well, living smack in the middle of the city and next to the highway a kill range of 100 yards is just not feasible, our pups only go out into their lot to play and use the bathroom (6 foot chain link fence). Thanks for the suggestions guys, Ill keep my eyes open.

I too am a well- practiced, accurate shooter. I shoot to kill, that's why I deer hunt with a Ruger #1. (single shot). I don't remember posting, "shoot at". As far as cruelty of treble hooks, OK I see your point; not that different than foot hold traps, your going to shoot the animal on site so....?

Sounds like he needs some snares for his application.

I've trapped several, yotes on Lookout inside city limits over the past couple of years. There are still plenty more that crusie through at night and make my dogs (85# labs) go nuts.

I second the 17hmr. Perfect round for the job and can still reach out pretty far if needed.

@ catjuggin .. Please Understand.. I was in no way trying to degrade your remarks about the traps.. I have no problems with any type trap that is monitored properly... I really should have cleared it By saying that I personally Did not like the cruelty of an animal in pain for 22 hours in a trap. I commented that I shoot them to kill and not at them to wound. Sorry and sincerely apologize for misleading with the comments. I admire your Trapping skills and have ZERO problems with what you do. I rather enjoy your Beaver thread. The shoot at was referencing the original poster trying to get off a quick shot "AT" a Coyote.

It's all cool man.
More people should take a responsible approach to predator management. If a problem of interaction with a yote is repetative and quasi-predictable, try and trick that yote into range and pop-it a cap to the dome., OR

If you can safely and ethically trap, go for it, it isn't hard or too exspensive to get going.

Snares run +/-$2.00
.22 hollow point runs about $0.01 apiece.

Fur trapping has become POLITICALLY INCORRECT, thus frowned upon by some, so ......

tough doo-doo to them,

Tom,
In your situation, I doubt you realistically need to worry about the coyotes. More than likely they won't be in your enclosure when your dogs are anyway. If by chance they do come in, a shotgun will give you a better chance of hitting the coyote. Keep in mind, if he's tangled up with one of your dogs..........

The last .22LR HPs I bought were almost $10/box. On my calculator, that works out to ~ $0.20 a round.

BTW, isn't the government supposed to protect us?

Wouldn't a shot gun endanger his own dogs?

Personally I love the .22 magnum
