I took my boat to James this morning and let him do some maintenance... water pump, lower unit oil, spark plugs, compression check, leak down testing ... he sure knows his stuff emoSmile Everything went as planned and I'm glad I took it to him. He taught me a lot about how these engines work, things that can go wrong and customizations ppl make to increase performance, boat setups, etc ... he's been doing this for years and it shows. He's loaded up with tools and knows how to use them.
Water pump wasn't in as bad of shape as I thought it would be... but, the new pump really did make the motor pee a lot better emoBigsmile Compression testing checked out fine, all within tolerances... but, the leak down testing didn't fare so well emoEek .... cylinders are loosing between 15 and 49 percent pressure leakage emoEek emoEek emoDoh Looks like I'm going to need a set of rings (at the minimum) emoBang .. glad we caught it early.... I'm afraid to run it much now. Going to have to arrange a time to get this addressed. Should be ok to use it some (I don't ever run far anyway) and get out a little.. but, I don't want to venture too far out past trolling motor range... lol.
I'd recommend James to anyone needing boat work done... great guy, very knowledgeable, fun to talk with emoSmile but, when we get time(and money) to get my boat in his shop... you'll need to get in line behind me... lol

Great meeting you James! .. we had a good time emoToast

i couldnt agree more Taz,i took my boat to him last weekend to have a new water pump put in and he even took the time to show me how to do it,and i learned more about outboards in 2 hours than i have in 20 years.if anyone needs any work done i would highly recommend James.

Glad to hear that! So, you like the show and tell!!!! LOL. Good to met you and your son. I had fun teaching you, just wish it was a little warmer and the wind wasn't so bad. I appreciate the help on the leakdown test, I like when people watch and help. It is easier to understand when you see the process. This is another example of GOOD compression and high leakage. That is why I DON"T rely on compression test other than to tell me what octane fuel to run. I will get list together for you as I just walked upstairs. After you guys left I started putting my mill back together from doing some maintenace on it. It will be busy next week!! I have a suzuki I have to mill out some broke head bolts and rebuild. I have to mill out a torque plate for Oldman's OMC X-flow here to sleeve 1 and bore all .020 over.

P.S. Go upstream. Easier to float down!!!! Don't think it will leave you on the water or do any damage. The rings are more than likely coked in like Ditchdocs piston that I showed you. Mercury oil injection fail they damage pistons. OMC VRO fails it cokes the rings. Doubt if will scuff the cylinders. Usually will force the ring in and will not come back out. That is why we have such high leakage on 4 cylinders. 2 were almost good! Have rebuilt many OMC's for this reason. Never seen any cylinder or piston damage. Would be a first. Run it like you normally would untill we can address it. Later!!

James has never done any work for me but he gave me free parts to fix mine and offered some great advice..I have had the pleasure of meeting and can vouch for him being a str8 up guy..Id defiantly let him work on my boat also..just hopefully that wont be needed! Knock on wood!

Blazer,
Thanks for the kind words!!!! Did you get that switch in today? Easier to start? later!

JDK,
Thanks man! Any time!

Hey wrenchin2 I have a merc.50 I think 2000 year model, would you recommend removing the oil injection?

Pm sent. I personally don't like oil injection. Don't trust them. I trust ME to put oil in my gas and know the mix is correct.

looking good there james (buggy)(fluffy) oh by the way guys these are his nick names.sorry james i couldnt resist.u the man.lol--------ps i am glad my motor is allready in line for repair.

I couldnt agree more about James,He taught me more in a few hours about my Merc than I could have learned in a lifetime and he knows his stuff about milking more out of a motor. He has prob saved me a new motor by finding problems early and fixing them, will be getting my motor back the end of the week if he can remember where all the bolts go!LOL He even said that I might be able to help again which if anybody knows me and mech stuff is a no no. I would highly recomend James to anybody that needs motor work done and have already given his name to several of my friends for there repars, just gin line and wait! Cya this week James for he rebuild and Thanks emoThumbsup emoThumbsup emoThumbsup

doc,
You going to come help? I don't remember where all the bolts go!!!! You were suppose to be watching and remember where they go!!!!LOL!!!!!

Thanks guys again for all the kind words. Except for yours old man...look like yours has just got pushed back with that response!!!!!!!!LOL!!!! Just happy to help and share knowledge. For those who have met me you know I DON"T SHUT UP!LOL!!! I enjoy talking and teaching. Most of it is pretty simple and makes alot of sense after it is explained or showed. Later!!

Do you work from your house or do you have a shop, where are you located. Have a 200 mercury EFI
1999 model would like to have some tests ran on THANKS

I am in dunlap. I work out of my home...What test are you wanting done? I don't have a ddt so would be limited if EFI issue. Mechanical isn't a problem.
