A friend of mine (yea, I have "a" friend) taught me something recently. It's a website with topo/lake maps that you can drag your cursor across and pinpoint GPS coordinates. http://mapserver.maptech.com In other words, if you want to share a very specific spot (hint, hint) you can go to the map, place your cursor on the spot and note the GPS Coordinates. Then send your friend (me maybe, emoBigsmile) a link to the map and the coordinates and there will no longer be any need to say, "about a cast-and-a-half out from the big rock just to right of the pine tree on the first long, skinny point north of the red buoy."

AND, he taught me how to turn great big long url's into short urls. Go to www.tinyurl.com ... paste your long url into the window, click "Make TinyURL!" and bingo... a url with 232 characters is reduced to 25 characters.

Okay, I'll start...
Go to http://tinyurl.com/2q9g9a (Warning, Maptech can sometimes be pretty slow. Give it time to load.)

With your cursor find:
Latitude - 35 10 00
Longitude - 85 06 57

Go there when the bluegill start to bed. You'll be glad you did.

That is very handy info for sharing locations. I can see several uses for this even for folks without GPS. They can still share locations by using this map. They will have to align themselves with a major land feature. Like on your example, I think someone could find that spot off that small creek mouth if they study your map. Another use would be that If in an emergency, This site could be used to find the spot of a stranded boater. If the boater had GPS, then he could call for help from someone who has a PC and they could use this site to see the area on the map. They then could know where to start their search.

Thanks RSimms! I have seen a few maps from this site but I had no clue about the coordinates and how great a communication tool this could be. emoThumbsup

Richard,

Thanks for the info ---- This will work well with my GPS 76CSX. It not only will help with pinpointing fishing spots, but it makes planning a hiking trip easy!!!!!!

TRIED IT A LITTLE THIS MORN....I LOVE MAP STUFF......THIS WILL BE A GOOD WAY TO PINPOINT SPOTS AND SAVE THEM TO FILE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE....NOW IF I COULD ATTACH THEM TO MY "FISHING LOG" !

Maptech maps are great. They are expensive to buy on CD but they are great. The maps on line have a bit to be desired but I think that they are fairly accurate. If you want to share a URL with someone please don't type it out. My kids showed me how to cut and paste with the keyboard years ago. Just highlight what you want to send to someone whether it be a pic or a URL or text message then press the Ctrl key(lower R hand corner of keyboard) and the letter C both at the same time or the Ctrl first and then the C key second. Then wherever you want to put what you just "cut" out of the webpage that you were on is stored in the memory. Then put your cursor onto the place where you want to put the info. and press the Ctrl key and then the V key and voila! It magically appears where you had your cursor. Like this:

I am not trying to hijack the thread. I would like to add a suggestion to CCSM and anyone else who uses Garmin handheld GPS units. CCSM if you use your GPS for hiking you should acquire the TOPO software from Garmin. It expands the use of your unit 10X over. It will give you info of trails and back roads, Creeks and every thing to abandoned old mine shafts to explore. You can veiw maps on your PC with it that are very helpful.

The reason I posted this on the forum rather than PM is so that others may take this advice as well.
