grilled crappie

i wouldnt think it would be for very long. couple mintues a side. i would wrap them in foil with butter and lemon or something and put them on for about 15-20 min

I never grill anything in foil as it defeats the purpose unless your grilling over a camp fire. I want grill-marks, that is where the flavor comes from using a gas grill.

Very high heat, and you must oil the grates or the meat itself very well. Mark both sides and pull, doesnt take a minute per side or you will be picking crappie out of the grill with chop-sticks....not fun! emoLaugh

XLDVee - 9/16/2008 3:46 PM I grill all my fish in foil. Ive lost too many comrades to the good ol' red rocks below..... :)

Go buy you a good fish grate at wally world. You can grill directley on the grill, and donot have to directley flip the fish. You just turn the grate over. I recomend spraying the grate with pam before putting on the grill though.

Thats whatI use. Yea...spray it so it wont stick but on one side of your fillets, put strips of bacon!!!!! Fish is 9 times out of 10 , done when the bacon is cripsy. Good eating!

try a hickory plank... or get a pizza stone made by Primo best way to cook any fish.. never done it with crappie but other fish have done it and it is awesome.. The hickory planks can be used a few times but the primo pizza stone will last forever...It cooks all around the fish without directly cooking it..man its good.. PM me and i can tell you where to get one locally

if you were grilling crappie fillets how long would you grill them?

I would not grill crappie fillets too fragile. Go with a whole fish or butterflied (skin on even better). On whole fish stuff cavity with a couple slices of citrus or herbs, then grill.

Those of you that are cooking on foil or pizza stone, you are defeating the purpose of grilling, might as well use a pan.

Not defeating the purpose at all. I would just rather eat my fish than pick it out of the grill for hours.....not to mention its awfully tasty with some lemon zest and fresh thyme with melted garlic butter.....YUM!!!

XLDVee, not trying to be agruementative. Why not just cook it on a pan, as it is the same as cooking on foil? If you are going to grill something it needs to get grill marks. Just like BBQ is pork, nothing else, although I do enjoy a brisket (smoked so not bbq).

"BBQ" is anything that is smoked, beef, chicken, pork, burgers, or wild game. "If you smoke it they will come"...ooops lost my train of thought there.

A BBQ grill is any vehicle that burns wood, charcoal or gas to cook in a faster manner than smoking. Hope this clears it up for yall! emoLaugh

Sounds like we need to have an Official CFF Grill-N-Smoke Off soon!
Craig why dont you put this together?

Just think, fish, chicken, brisket, venison steaks & sausage, brats, dogs, pulled pork, ribs.... Afterwards, we could have all the attendees vote for thier favorite?

I dont want to cook it on a pan because it cooks way too hot, even on the lowest setting. I want it to cook a little slower with the butter and lemon and let it have time to absorb into the fillet. But the main reason I cook it in foil on the grill is because I normally dont cook JUST fish. I am a rather large feller, so a skimpy fish fillet aint gonna do me! haha I am normally grilling 3 or 4 different things when I grill, such as chicken tenders or pork loins or backstrap along with the fish, so its just a lot easier on me if I do it all together. I agree, grilling something should leave grill marks. But doing the fish in the foil allows me to cook it over indirect heat where I can let it sit for longer and not have to worry about burning/ruining the fish. To each his own, I just try to make things easier on myself, which usually in the long run tends to bite me in the rear anyways.....haha
