Per my wife's clear instructions, I had to be out of the woods by noon today. Got to the farm at 9:30. Decided to mostly scout areas I haven't hunted this year, and to take a seat if I found a really great looking spot. Well I just walked the mountainn for awhile, found an area that was TORE UP w/ tracks, scat, rubs, etc. Decided to use my remaining 2 hours right there. Found a good little spot up under some rocks out of the rain. Once I got settled I sent a text message to my buddy (who was hunting across the valley) saying something along the lines of '"You've got to hunt over here; theres sign everywhere." I sent that @ 9:53. I put my phone away, blew my grunt call a few times, and sat back to wait. Almost right away I saw a flash of brown coming from my right. He ran across in front of me and down below the rocks out of sight. I didn't know if he was gone or had stopped. I had to ease up to a crouch to see if he was there. He had stopped on my left side about 50' from me. The only shot I had was @ his neck, and that was through a 2" gap between two trees. Not an ideal shot from a stable position, much less a crouch, but one I knew I could make. I steadied myself and squeezed off the shot. He dropped right where he had stood. I checked the time again: 9:58. FIVE MINUTES FROM START TO FINISH! Once I walked up to him, I was somewhat disappointed. I had just seen a WIDE rack, decided he was a shooter, and hadn't looked at it again after that. He's a short 7 pt, would have been an 8 but had one broken off. Weighed 115 lbs gutted and had an inside spread that was just under 17". WAY too cool to call him in like that, and to do it so fast!
Im happy with him!
