Hey guys,

My best bud Josh came down from Indiana and we did some fishing with Mike Mitchell. I have learned quite a bit from him and am looking forward to taking knowledge from him, people from the forum, and articles to be a successful catfisherman. Not having a boat is my biggest problem right now.
We started the day fishing in Guntersville Lake and caught 5 blues. 3 of them were pretty nice sized. 1 blue weighed around 30, another 35, and another probably at least 40. These are just estimates, but hopefully pretty close. When the water was turned on at G-Ville dam, we went and caught a ton of skipjack and stocked up for my brother in law back home. After that, we drifted for awhile and caught 2 small blues. We finished the day anchoring up and Josh caught a 50 inch blue that was 33 inches in girth. I imagine it was at least 65, maybe 70 lbs. I am not totally sure on the weight but think that is a close estimate. Overall, I'd say we had a pretty nice day. All fish were caught on cut skipjack, a personal favorite bait of mine. Hope you like the pics and I always enjoy the cat reports on here. The interest seems to be really peaking for these big blues.

I certainly hope it took a long time to get the slim off of you all. Great pictures with smiles and that looks as if you all had a wonderful time.... Good Job...emoGeezer

Hey guys,

Glad you are enjoying the pics. When we were drifting we were using small to medium skipjack fillets. I would say about 2-3 inches long or so. The big one was toward the end of the day and we anchored up with big chunks of skipjack. Before this summer, I really never though about drifting for these big cats. On Guntersville, there was no water running and I must have been hitting them right in the head drifting catching those 3 nice ones. Josh didn't have as much luck for some reason while drifting, his bait was only 10 feet from mine, but He got his big payoff at the end of the day though with the 50 incher. This summertime fishing is fun, I like the combination of drifting and then anchoring up later for the big trophy. It is a nice variety and keeps things interesting. I imagine if I can get a boat eventually you guys will see me just about every weekend.

Keep on posting pics of these monster blues, it never gets old seeing one.

Great catch!emoThumbsup I am amazed at how many times 1 person always seems to catch the biggest, or most while fishing in the same boat with a buddy who is using the same bait, same depth, and everything. Sometimes it is the guy up front and sometimes it is the guy in the rear of the boat doing all the catching. It is not too hard for me to see by the way that I drift. I drift edges of the channel drops (structure) and sometimes the front of the boat in directly on the edge and sometimes the back of the boat is directly over the edge. Depends on where the fish are positioned I suppose. I see fish suspended just a few feet off the edge and at the same depth as the drop at times.emoGeezer
