Met up with MrWiskers this morning so he could show me how to fish minners aroud the bridge pilings downtown. Stopped by Hamilton's and picked up 6 doz 3" shiners and it was game on. He had two fish in the boat before I could even get tied on! He would get the boat on the downstream side of the piling and from there we would toss the shiners in to the eddy water right against the piling. We laid a whoopin' on them today. Had 29 spots, several bream, and one little smallie in three hours. So easy it's almost like cheating. Spinning gear, light line, #1 Gammy circle hook, and a tiny split shot. Wait for the line to get tight and start reeling, just that easy.

After we had the livewell full of eating sized fish we went looking for smallmouth and about all we found was MadBomber and Fat Al. Al had his feet up the whole time and every time I looked over The Bomber was trying to free a snag. Gotta love those two.

Whiskers then proceeded to show me how to jig a spoon and landed a couple more non-keeper smallies, some big bull bream, and a drum. I had a decent largemouth on a fly-n-rind, and he caught another little bream on a crankbait. No takers on a pointer or a worm. The bite died when the gale force winds blew in.

Totaled 34 bass, bunches of bream, a few smallies, and a drum. Had a great day. I am DEFINATLY taking me some minners next time!

I was wondering the same thing. Now that's funny ...no wonder you all caught all the fish, You scared the crap out of them... I bet they were just jumping in the boat... It was nice meeting you Clint and you can see why I have trouble catching fish, MB stayed hungup most of the time... can't fish when you are trying to help get him unhung...but it was a beautiful, glorious day to be on the water... you guys done goood.emoGeezer

That sounds like a great few hours! Those spotted bass are so beautiful! I just wish that they would get bigger. A 2lber is quite a tussle. Live baiting is a very effective way to catch fish. Have you ever used threadfins for the bait? I wonder whether they would take threadfins that were frozen. I've got a bunch of frozen threadfins if you would like some to try. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks for riding with me today Clint. We got our fill on the spots. It actually started out very slow compared to the previous trips but it got a whole lot better as we tried different pillings. Clint beat me on the larger fish as he used a split shot the whole day and the larger fish seemed to be a little deeper. I did have one run a shiner to the surface the bust him like a topwater plug. Nice!!!! We acually saw quit a few fish as they ate the shiners and one fish tried 3 times to eat one of Clint's shiners before a hookup. Very interactive way to fish.

Polo, the bass pretty much will not touch a dead shiner so I think it would be doubtful they would eat a frozen treadfin. They like them to be moving.

Like Mike said, If the shiner ain't kickin', he ain't getting ate! All the spots I cleaned today were loaded with threadfins, little 1.5in to 2.5in shad. Not a single crawdad in the bunch. If you could net you up some live shad, it would be a hoot.

Seems to be true on the shinner vs Crawdad thing. But, if you went to the riprap and got the same amount, I'd be willing to bet that you would see ALLOT of crawdads in those tummys.

After every trip down there I have seen nothing but Crawdads but the other day when we fish mid river and the bridges...nothing but minnows.

Sounds like Riverpark is gonna be crowded this weekend. Wonder how far they run down river do this event?
