Before I tear this reel apart, I figured I would toss this out to you guys to see if anyone has had this problem. After casting, the handle turns freely and will not engage the spool...I not only had to set the hook but also hand-line a bass today

! This reel has performed flawlessly until now. Any ideas? Or just chunk it and get an early start on Father's Day

All three of my new KVD quantums do that. If you press the thumb bar down and turn it usually engages. If you are flipping try a revo. Best drag on the market.

According to the Quantum troubleshooting page:</p>

<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="700" border="0"><tbody><tr><td valign="top">Thumb bar / button will not pop up after handle is turned.
</td><td width="50"></td><td valign="top">Cause #1: Thumb bar / button or release slider spring is bent or broken.
Solution: Replace thumb bar / button spring or release slider spring.

Cause #2: Dirt / debris in release slider.
Solution: Clean and relubricate release slider.
</td></tr></tbody></table></p>

I'll try cleaning it. If that don't work, I may have to go shopping

As rough as I am on reels, I'm going to stay under the $100 mark on the next one. I've heard a lot of good things about the Daiwa Exceler...anybody tried one?

Not the Exceler, but I still have some 80's model Procasters that still work sweet.... I must say though I love the Citica. It's a little larger than the Curado, and is the best reel I've had to date.
If the cleaning doesn't work, try turning the drag all the way down and then try the button down trick that Lance offered. I've had success doing that. Wormhook had some nice reels not to long ago that didn't look like they sold. Hit him up. He's got some nice gear. That or drop by Lance's house... he'll be tired of one before long!

Yuo have a clutch pawl spring broken or the clutch pawl is worn out. Most likely it is the spring......
what brand of reel is it? bassnvol

I own one of the a newer energy ( colored ones) and it's crazy what it does sometimes. I'll start to reel and the gears make some God aweful noise!! Over all it's a great reel, but Quantums act weird a lot.

Tore it open, cleaned it up, and dumped Hot Sauce over all the gears...works great! However, my first cast with it resulted in the World's Greatest Backlash followed by another "hand-lined" bass...that Hot Sauce is unreal

. Thanks for all the tips, guys.

My new KVD Crankin' reel does it. I contacted Quantum and they gave me a addy to send it to them tho get fixed. If I just lightly tap my thumbbar it will engage so it's not that big a deal to me. I think they should recall them though. I have read hundreds of bad reviews and it's all the same problem.
