Fished the dog fight last night. Following an absolutely nutty blast off Chris and I raced down river where we caught fish tuesday. First cast with a DJW SB, yielded a keeper. Second cast, keeper. Third cast, had a hog on(4lbs?) got off at the boat. Fourth cast and caught another 15" fish. Then it died! We caught maybe 5 more slicks left the area, tried a few more places and most holes were covered with boats, went back down river and was greeted by an electrical storm, and spent the rest of the evening playing lightning rod. We had 5.66# with our 3 and it took 6.64 to get $$. 10 something won it (John Dickert/ James Williams)and they had big fish which was 5.18#. All three of the keepers i caught came on a 1 ounce DJW double willow, in about 15 ft of water. There was not much current, and too much lightning, thats my excuse! This morning i spoke with Chris and Lightning had struck his A/C at his house and fried it, so the storm must have been pretty bad in E. Brainerd. Itwas one of those night that keeps the blood preesure high!

I dont know what happened, I guess everyone got out to the mouth late, because no one was lined up ready to go and all of the sudden they blew the air horn. Chris and I were pointing down river we were behind Cory Nichols and another Bullet idling when they blew. All of the Sudden this guy in a blazer, to the left of us, lights it up like he is gonna run in front of all of us to go up river and we were heading down. i looked at chris and said "Stand on it!" We finally got out in front of the mess and were able to outrun it. Normally everyone does real well at these blast offs by pointing the direction they are running and running as straight a line as possible to hole # 1. But, every thing went fine and everyone made it back to the weigh in safetly. Thats what counts!

Anyone know where I can get a heavy spinnerbait around here on short notice? Looking for something heavy to throw in a night tourney tonight.

Good grief.... four keepers in first four casts and then nada! That's got to be a killer...

I know! I thought it was gonna be a repeat of last tuesday when we would have had 10#+ with 3, but they shut off like a switch. Just another twist and turn in the trials and tribulations of my aventures in Tx fishing. I dont know if the water shut off, or we just caught them at the tail-end of a feeding period??? But hey, no matter how hard we try no one can ever know exactly why fish choose to bite or not bite at any particular moment and place, and thats what makes the successful trips all the more enjoyable! It also keeps me looking for the answers.

Drop shot, holler at Ranger Rob, I dont know if he can do anything on short notice, for future references, he makes the best SBs around! he made me some purple night baits that do real well! If you cant get anything Soddy Custom usually has some good heay SBs.

What are you looking for exactly Dropshot? I only build order-by-order, but I do happen to have two 3/4 heads already painted and top coated. I would only have to hang blades and build the skirts if you could make it to Cleveland later this afternoon. The heads are solid black w/ silver glitter if this would fit the bill.

Lemme know...

Bumble Bee Kid and I watched you goofy guys blast off last night..LOL! Looks like you had quite a turnout!
Kinnda reminded me of the races. All these guys up front then low and behold, the little Tracker came puttin by us. I told Tom, "theres your winner!" The sleeper boat! ;)

That was an evil looking storm. After we fish a bit up towrds CF, the lightning was getting pretty nasty so we put hung it up for the night. Glad to hear everyone came back safe!

Was that you just south of Pinky's point? We were in the purple/white bullet, we were right behind the Red/silver bullet. That little tracker was Cory nichols and he placed 4th with 7 something. I know all about sleepers. In high school we used to fish out of an 18ft tracker and we won alot of $$$ out of that little guy.

For me to say it was Pinkys point, I have no idea. Thats the first time ever I've been out fishing in that area. We were on our way elsewhere and just stopped to watch the blast off. Didnt fish any, just observing. I love the sound of those blast offs!!!

I've never caught a fish running 70+ mph, but it sure is fun!

Sportsman warehouse has terminators in 1 oz. but my question is how do you dropshot a spinnerbait? under a sinko?

I agree. I did have to bite the bullet though. (not a "BULLET) and traded my Tracker Pro170 in for a Stratos 285 with a 150. Yea...its fun getting to the hole now!!! That was also the first time I've sat and watched a blast off. What a hoot!! Those engines on yours and the bullet in front of you where rockin back and forth. Talk about some torque! I'll have to partner up one evening and fish with y'all in that Dog Fight.

I cant take credit for the rig, its my partner's. it has a 200hp mariner magnum, the boat in front of us is a friend of ours, he has 250hp Merc XB. Whats funny is how he has 50 more horses but we stick right with him for the first mile until he gets on the top end, I think it has alot to do with the extra weight the 250 has compared to ours.

churley,

My son , Brent, said the same thing. He had 3 keepers in the 1st 15 min. on his 1st spot & never caught another decent fish. He & his mom fished the dogfight together & she lost 2 keepers early as well. They had a great time together til the storms came. Kim said that the trip back to HB was scary with 3-4' seas & the ol Triton took a couple over the bow, but their prayers were answered as everyone made it in safely.
Did you hear how the fella who got into the fire ants at weigh in & had an allergic reaction is doing. We were there til the ambulance came & he seemed to be doing a little better. It was touch & go there for a little bit. We were praying for him too.

Who was it? I was standing over there and my partner got eat up with them, and i know Cory Nichols was getting bit. I hope it wasn't any of our guys.

It was the guy who helps run the dogfight. Wears glasses & had the Michigan cap on. Nice guy who usually collects entry fees & checks livewells before blast off.
