My 9 year old got his first gobbler this morning. Talk about pumped! I don't think I've ever seen him this excited...

Now for the story...

After a long wet drive to the lease in Stewart Co on Friday night we met my mom and dad who drove down from K'ville at the campground and set up camp. Didn't hear a gobble on Sat but my dad managed to kill a bird late in the afternoon and saw a couple of more so my young'un decided he wanted to hunt with Grandpa on Sun morning. We stayed up late around camp roasting marshmallows and playing cards so when I woke him up this am, he decided he wanted to sleep in. About 30 seconds later he popped straight up and said "Let's Go!".

It was a foggy morning - and about 9 am - my Dad called on the cell phone and told me they had heard several gobble and saw one gobbler around 50 yds (too far for Blake's 20 ga). We were gonna head home around lunch so at10 I talked to them again and they hadn't heard anything else so we were going to try another area. I drove to pick them up but they were no shows at the meeting spot. I decided to drive on down an old clear cut access road and maybe meet them halfway and save them some walking. When I didn't see them anywhere on the road, I dialed Dad's number to see where they were at, he answered and sounded excited, and I could hear my son whooping and hollering in the background. Dad said, "Here talk to Blake" and handed off the phone. Blake could hardly talk and I could hear the "Whooomp Whoomp Whooomp" of a turkey flopping in the leaves. They had been taking the blind down to come meet me at the road when this bird sounded off across the hollow from them. They moved quickly down the ridge they were on to get closer and set up behind a big poplar tree. Dad began to call and the gobbler answered and was on his way! The jake crossed the hollow and came up the ridge straight to them but started getting nervous when he couldn't find that lonesome hen. As he started to move away, Blake was able to get his gun around to the other side of the tree and get the bead on him and lay the smack down!!!

What a weekend ! I'm prouder of this jake than any turkey I've ever taken !!!!

Great job the boy done on the turkey, gramps done pretty good with the caller, thanks for taking your son with you, he will get up any time you tell him to from now on.

Super job Blake! remember guys lets keep those kids going for the future of the sport.
