I don't fish down there much but dealing with the current is the toughest part. The best way to deal with it is to go to 4 or 6 lb test mono and as the guys said, tubes, grubs are good baits. Find eddies or drops and fish them well. You have to either anchor on the drops or have a strong trolling motor to stay on them. The other thing that I have done in the past when my trolling motor was low on juice is to take a 1/2 oz jighead and a crawdad trailer and just let the current pull me downstream in the channel or on the channel edges. If you can fish vertically it's best so use whatever pound test line you can get away with and still stay vertical. As long as you feel hard bottom with rocks you have a chance at some smallies.
