I currently run a 1998 Mercury EFI 175 on the back of my 2002 Aries. It has a strange issue that no one has been able to come up with a solution to. Somedays it runs greats. Other days like a dog. Here is the problem:

1. In neutral you can press the throttle and get it up as high as you want.

2. When you put it in forward it will appear to bog down at 2000RPM for the longest time.

3. After a few minutes it will start running like it should.

Somedays after it acts up in the morning it will run fine the rest of the day. Other days it will act up everytime you start it. Does anyone have any ideas? Does anyone know what a merc shop will charge for diagnosing the issue. I have had several techs look at it and no one seems to be able to give me an answer. Really is frustrating when you need to get somewhere in a hurry and cannot.

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem, I guess you have checked all your filters, you might run some Berryman's carb cleaner thru the engine, get the kind that you put in the gas tank.

Hard to say with the motor being an EFI, but I would not run it until it is fixed. If fuel delivery is the problem, then so is lubrication. Fuel injector screens may have trash in them, which would restrict flow.

Sounds like an electrical issue to me. I had a stator go out and cause similar symptoms....did the techs put the DDT on it?

Most shops are charging 80+ dollars an hour

I was thinking it sounded like a switchbox or a stator. It could be ethanol poisoning if you haven't ran it a lot and don't have any fuel stabilizer like stabil or seafoam in it. My old 175 mariner used to do what your motor is doing a lot and it was always a switchbox.
