The first ever Yellow Jacket Invitational high school bass tournament was held Saturday on Nickajack with the GCHS Bass Team hosting White County and Rhea County. The winning team was Grundy County's Hank Lowrie and Dakota Cantrell with 5 fish for 15.24 pounds. The team started the morning hot with a limit of fish in the first 30 minutes of blast off and were culling up within 10 minutes after that. The tourney started late at 8:00 am due to a fog delay.
Lucas Howell and Devin Wallis from Rhea County were second with 5 fish for 13.54. Ty Cloyd and Isaiah Gardenhire from White County were third with 5 for 12.86. Caleb and Mikey Jenkins notched fourth with 4 fish for 11.96 pounds. They also had big fish with a 3.88 largemouth. The top four teams took home plaques for each competitor. Plaques were also awarded for the big fish and for the first place team’s school. Mike’s Pharmacy in Tracy City sponsored the plaques.
Along with their plaques Lowrie and Cantrell received $50.00 gift certificates from Castle’s Outdoors in Whitwell. Both competitors on the second and third place teams each received tackle packs worth over $35.00 each. The big fish prize was a spinning reel worth over $60.00. The remaining competitors all received tackle packs except for two who were drawn out for $25.00 Academy Sports + Outdoors. Prizes were sponsored by the National Bass Fishing Trail’s Tennessee district and Castle’s Outdoors.
The tourney was a warm up for the Tennessee High School state championship to be held on Nickajack May 12 out of Shellmound ramp and hosted by the City of Kimball and The Bass Federation. More information about high school fishing can be found at www.highschoolfishing.org.
