I am still very green on the Hiwassee. This was my 3rd trip there. I put in at B&B Marina and headed down to the 58 bridge area. I was blind as a bat on the water...with just my depth finder and map. I stopped at Price Creek and thought it looked good on the map. It was very shallow there...too shallow to run the big motor so I stopped to troll a bit and look for some goodies worth fishing. While I had the trolling motor down I made my FIRST cast with a 3" grub and my first cast put me a nice 12" crappie in the boat. I thought it was the start of a good day but it was the ONLY crappie I caught. I caught it at the mouth of Price creek where it goes from like 14' to 3' in just a boat length. The fish was shallow. I had lots of hits and caught one bluegill so I guess they were the culprits. I threw out a marker buoy when I caught the fish and tried to do everything by the book. I threw several different sizes of grubs and colors of grubs and small crankbaits. I trolled some. No more crappie. Water temp there was mid 50s and clairity was around 1' or less.
I ran on down to the 58 bridge before it got dark to look around. I ran into a couple coming out of Agency creek and I think that must be where a lot of the folks are catching fish right now. They said they'd only been there a little while and caught a bunch of short fish and got 4 keepers. And they had talked to another fella that had been there longer that caught 40 or so fish in all and only had 7 keepers I think is what they said. I gave my one fish to them...atleast they had enough to fillet at the end of the day. I'll be down tomorrow trying my hand. Probably have to wait in line. This weather has itchy trigger fingered fisherman on the water now. heheh.
