Ok, so the hunting bug has bit me, but I've decided (for now) to hold off on getting a rifle for deer season until the end of 2013/beginning of 2014. Figuring I'll be able to get a much better price after everyone like me has tried hunting, hasn't killed anything, or needs some cash to pay taxes.

While I mourn the loss of what I'd been planning as my first deer season, I take comfort knowing I'm smarter than I think sometimes.

Granted, if I were to come across the right gun at the right price, I may change my mind.

Well, that is all I have to say. Hopefully this wasn't as large a waste of cyberspace as this:

Crap. Can't read the captions.

Says: "Another exciting day in principles of health science...learning how to take temperature hahaha :)"

To which someone commented, "Those are rectal thermometers..."

And with that, I shall keep my head high and my eyes open!

Also, got a very kind invite from a CFFer, who offered to come alongside me for a hunt and give me a loaner.

Love this website.

A single shot handi rifle runs about $200. Surely you got papas old 12 gauge in the closet. A 1oz. Slug will get you started.

Yup, a slug gun will get-er done in close quarters for sure.</p>

Check out theoutdoorstrader.com Its a great website that i do some gun trading with the people on there. Im sure you can find something you are looking for.

Fish don't care how nice your boat is and deer don't care how much your gun cost.
I will second the handi rifle and the shotgun!

you can get a good gun like the rem 770 at Wallyworld for around 300 in 243 3006 or 270 all of witch will do a great job for deer I would go with you and let you use a 243 or a 270 but I don't have any place to go or tenn license

Y'all just won't let me pinch my pennies will ya? Hahaha. A couple hundred sounds good. And have no fear. I'm not interested in a pretty or expensive rifle. I just want it to work every time I pull the trigger. Also, I got my granddads shotgun. But it's a 20 gauge that can't tolerate slugs. Poor me...

And quick question: when you hang a deer to cool overnight, how do you keep other animals from showing up and eating it?

You answered you own question when you said "hang". Lol I don't hang anything overnight or to cool. I gut it out and drag back to the truck and right to the processor. I use Mike Dunn in Rossville. Known him for years and he has always been right to us. He even left a key out for me because I had to track a good buck one night and got to his place about 11 pm. Thats a trusty guy. As for a weapon you could look at guntrader.com as well.

get a 91/30 mosin nagant. you can usually buy them for less than 100 dollars and is a very accurate gun. i just bought another one for 100 dollars with 200+ rounds of ammo. ammo is really cheap for them too

Shoot it, gut it, skin it, quarter it out. Then I simply pack all the parts on ice in coolers for a week draining off the excess water and blood every day. The meat will be dark brown around the outside and the prettiest burgandy red behind it.

I proccess my own and cut it accordingly to what I want. The only time I take one to a processor now is if Ive given the deer away or want breakfast sausage. :)

I'll have to dig up a photo or post here on my game hanger too. Last season I skinned and quartered out quite a few deer for other people.

On a side note.....Take some of the advice on the rifles. Theres deals out there to be found.

So most folks don't let 'em cool. Ah. So much to learn...

And looked up that 91/30 mosin. Very interesting. I like the idea of it. Do you own one? Is it fairly accurate? And is the kick hard and heavy like some say or is it easy to handle?

The most important thing is getting out there regardless of what kind of gun you have. When I started hunting I was using my dad's 410 single shot with a slug. Loved every second of the hunt and that 410 would kill a deer the same as a nice 30-06 (inside it's effective range).
