First decade 60’s. 67 to be exact the first year it opened in Marion County. There was two deer checked in all year and I was lucky enough to kill one. I saw the buck about a month before season opened while coon hunting with my daddy. It took one hour to kill him opening mourning. This deer hunting seemed pretty easy to me. Cost… one field jacket my brother gave me, pair of levis $5, pair of boots from Herter’s $15, British 303 with rifling shot out $15 dollars, box of shells $2 , one biscuit and sausage from Mammas. Case xx knife my daddy gave me. Camping cost maybe $15, license $5 Total Cost $62
Second decade 70’s. The best hunting decade of my life. Could hunt anywhere you wanted, I was in shape and could walk the mountains from daylight to dark and killed a few good uns. Cost… M151 Army jeep bought in Tracy ….$900, Remington 742 carbine from Ray Judge $80, Clothes from Herter’s $30, Shells $5, Tree Spikes $12, Camping supplies $100, Bear recurve and arrows $80, license $10,Total cost $1217
Third decade 80’s. Starting to see fewer buck sign and more people sign but was seeing a lot of does. Hunting less and playing more and starting to get a little lazy as far as scouting. Killed a few but not many big uns. Cost… Honda 4 wheeler $2000, Baker tree stand $20, Hunting clothes $100, Shells $10, Martin Compound bow, sights,and arrows $200, license $20, Muzzle loader $100 Total cost $2400
4th decade 90’s. All the big Timber and land companies starting to buy all the land up. I have to travel further to hunt. I’m starting to see the benefits of deer management. Starting to see does and little bucks in bunches. Getting fat and lazy but would still get off the top and find a good one every now and then. Cost… New 4 wheeler $3500, hunting clothes $300, 2 new stands $275, Hunting lease $500, 4 wheeler trailer $300, camping supplies $800, license $30, New Muzzle loader $200 Total cost.. $6005
5th decade 2000’s. Fat, bad knees, Starting to lose my twist until I was introduced to Illinois. Cost… in the thousands.
6th decade 2010 till now. Starting to come full circle! Get up in the mourning grab a cup of coffee and look out the window. Call my friend and ask him if he wants to go in the morning and he says “nah got too much to do around the house” and I say “yea me too.” Cost.. a few bucks
