im curious as to how much different boat/trailer/gear rigs weigh. im wanting to get a boat sometime in the next year but i need to know what kind of boat to look for, aluminum, fiberglass, length, outboard size etc. i have a small toyota tacoma 4 cyl 5spd 4x4. i think my truck is rated for around 3500lbs. ive towed my buddies 14ft jon boat pretty good, but id like to know how big i could go so i know where to start looking.

thanks

I tow my Allison XB-21 with a V6 tacoma. Boat 1400, motor 500, batteries and equip probably 3-400 and I imagine the avg trailer is 1000 lbs in that length. You can get quite a few nice bass boats your truck would handle.

I tow my boat with an 87 mazda pickup with a blown headgasket and my boat 900 plus motor, gear, and fuel. cant beat a free truck.

Mine is boat is around 350lbs, battery 60lbs, seat 3lbs and engine 390LBS oh you said bass boat.........LOL!!!!

Alot of the smaller rigs in the 16-17' are pretty light. The nice thing about 4X4 is you have low range to pull it out. Doesn't take much get them going on flat ground.

I hope that weight is not the only factor that will determine your rig.

SHUT UP Josh....Don't say nothing bout me!!!!!!LOL!!

Wait untill I see you again...You will own a butt stomping!!!!! LOL!!

Why didn't you post your boats weight and stuff. Yours would be easy for his truck to pull without me in it!!!!

HEHE to be honest i dont know my boats weight
I do know I used to have a 17 1/2' tracker that I pulled with a 4 cylinder Nissan no 4 wheel drive and it did okay just avoid steep ramps and leave plenty of room for braking and you will be fine..I really like my big V8 for towing it does make a big difference

There should be no problem finding a boat you can pull. Most tx bass boats under 20' should be fine. The bigger issue is stopping power. If you have arig much over 1500, i would definitely reccomend having trailer brakes. You probably have the same brrakes I had on my '01 4 runner and they Sucked with a trailer going down hill. As mentioned before, having a 5sp and 4x4 will help you at the ramp, it's easy to pull anything on the flat.

My rig weighs 1384 Lbs. according to the manufacturer. This is boat, trailer, and motor. I got this boat because I don't have a truck and I pull it with (don't laugh) a Saturn. It does fairly well as long as I don't try to run 75 mph and watch my stopping distance.

Is it the Saturn Sky? That would be a sight!

There is some one in my neighborhood who has a center console bay boat that they pull with a sedan as well.

Again, the key is stopping.

Groomer I may have you beat, I pull mine with a scion XB 2006. The boat is longer than car, however actually it stops really good, and pulls the boat great. I'd say mine weighs in the 1100-1200 range. I would say I'm the only one in chatt with a cff sticker and a htich and my BASS sticker

Mine weighs about 1700 lbs. I have an aluminum boat and I love it. A glass boat will be heavier. Either way your truck should be fine.

The best combo I've seen is a guy pulling a brand new Ranger with a front wheel drive two-door Geo car. At a tournament one night, four of us had to sit on the hood to hold the front wheels down enough to pull the boat out of the water. :)

well that makes me feel much better guys. with my buddies boat it sucked big time going up the mountains going north on 111 at highway speeds(or at least trying to maintain). but i got there. i have pretty good stock 2 piston caliper brakes, and i have been researching on how to fit larger tundra brakes, so thats a possible upgrade. at the ramp was great tho, put in low range and i didn't even touch the gas pulling it out of the water. so now i just have to save up some money...

I will have to look for that Scion! I always wondered how those were for power. BTW I am such a dummy I forgot to tell what my boat is. It is a Bass Tracker Pro Team 170 TX. Mine is almost longer than the car.

Ditto: It's all about the brakes.
