I am wanting to take the registration decals off of the boat I just purchased. What is the best way to do this?

Use a hair dryer. Heat the letters one at a time and pull them off slowly. After you get them off use Goo Be Gone to remove the sticky stuff left from the letters. You can also use your wife or girlfriends nail polish remover to do it. Then use alchol on a T-shirt or lint free rag to remove any oils. You are now ready to install the new letters.

the auto stores make a rubber wheel that fits in your drill and they are the best at removing decals and numbers and not damaging the finish, got mine at o'reillys about 6.00 i think saves alot of time and easy to use

I have always used a razor blade, the kind you scrape paint from windows if you're sloppy when painting.

I got mine off with a hair blower, a plastic knife from Zaxbys and WD-40 . I had goo gone too but the WD-40 worked better for me.

thank yall! Did the hair dryer or heat gun mess up the finish of the boat? I have bought some goo gone so far and will probably try wd 40 when I do this to. I hear it works really good. I still have a little time before I put the new regristration on because I have not recieved it yet... I have tried home depot and lowes for the rubber wheel but they dont have them for what I have seen? I am going to try O'Reileys or auto zone soon because I want to make sure I dont mess up the fiberglasss...

When I did mine, I didn't try melting the letter and number decals off, just heated them up and pulled them off with my fingers ( use you own judgment with the heat ) You may try removing one before you spend money and time looking for a wheel as you may decide you don't need it. After I remove the letters and numbers, I then used the WD40 to clean up the glue. I had a Kentucky registration decal ( the state rectangular type decal and it was the booger.) I had to scrape it off with a plastic knife+ heat + WD40. If yours has a TN decal then it won't be as hard to come off as the my Kentucky decal was. They must use a different adhesive in Kentucky?

If I can do it then anyone can do it. I usually have trouble with everything I do, but this project went well for me,

Good Luck
