About two months ago I bought a new humminbird 597, I installed it using the same wires that the previous owner used with his unit. It seemed to work fine with no problem for about two months. The last two times I went out fishing it freezes up or completely shuts off if the unit is on when you start the big motor. What really confuse me is that it did not do it from the beginning, any ideas of why this is happening?

You might have a battery getting weak. My unit on the console would do the same thing and I changed my starting battery and the problem went away.

I would run new wires direct to the battery. Many issues can be tied directly to under powered units. It takes both Voltage and Current to properly operate a unit. It's like a motor you have has gas going to it but only half the spark plugs firing you only get partial performance. I suggest installing direct to the battery with soldered connections and a 3amp blade fuse soldered inline. If you need to extend the power cable I prefer 16 Gauge Multistrand wire.
