TWRAhas several different online options for the classroom part of the course. I would like to know if one might be more geared towardkids. My 9 year old will be taking it real soon. emoThanks

No, its the same course. Its very kid-friendly. The crappy part is having to sit through the classroom part with them....OMG it is boring! LOL

Like it was said above, the online is not really that good for kids - they really do not learn that much from the online version. The best for the kids are the week long (3 hour in eve) classes. they go a lot more in depth, and the kids really learn. The online is really just going through the motions. I was in charge of 5 boys (ages 9-12) this summer that took the online and sat with them in the one day class.
Two of the boys with extensive outdoor knowledge did really well, but the others that lacked previous hunting experience passed, but were by no means safe hunters. Had a friend take his 2 kids through the week long class, and they really learned a lot. To each his own, the online is approved and if your kid already has a lot of exp in the field....might be ok.

My daughter has been hunting with me for years, so when it came time for the class, she really did well. Like Reliable said, if the kid knows very little about safty, and about being in the field in general, they wont do nearly as well.

The guys that did ours were great with kids. The night they taught about modern firearms, they set the kids up by sending them out to help bring in the guns directly after teaching them to always check to see if they were loaded. We we had kids carrying in rifles, shotguns, dirty harry, saturday night specials, ect.... They let all of the kids stand up on stage as they opened the breeches to find them loaded! They had blanks of course, but that humilation really gave those kids something to remember. Out of 17 only one checked the breech before carrying the weapon in the building. And that's only minutes after being preached to always check it and never take anyones word for it.

It was boring and long, but kids just can't get the same thing off the net.

Hat's off to the volunteers who take the time to teach it.. It's no paying and the classes are few and far between.

I would suggest finding a good hunters ed teacher and make sure your kid takes that teachers course. It will make a bigger impression. I took mine years ago at Highland Sportsman's Club. Tony Sanders was one of the instructors...

Thanks for your input everyone. He has been hunting with me for several years and is very safety minded knows and respects guns (the few that I have ;) ) and the animals we harvest. The reason for the online course is because his Dad has been dragging his feet. He has to have his HS for some out of state tags we're applying for and March is the deadline. So this weekend they are having a range day for the onliners and I was trying to get him to study and be ready for Saturday. I would rather him take the regular course as well but I don't really want to sit through it again either.
Hmmmmm......Maybe Mom?????? emoBadLanguage emoTskTsk emoBadLanguage Probably not.
Thanks again.
