Having a son on the way in Feb. I was wondering if the lifetime lcense for a new babby to age one is like a small game & fish. Or is it like a sportsmans license? I think I heard they cost about $350.00. The license that is, I know the child cost a bit more than that.

It is the mac daddy license. It is a Lifetime Sportsman License and it cost $200 until age 3. It covers everything forever in TN, no matter where they live.

You can find more out about it at www.tnwildlife.org.

Awe ... congrats 2jigs!!!! I'd better get a fishing trip planned with you soon. I'm sure that young'in will be in the boat in no time and there won't be room for me. :)

Great investment at any cost(within reason)  My son is now Eleven and has had his about 5 - 6 years now.  The money goes to fund TWRA and help provide game & fish for your child's future.  The second reason is that he will never have to renew and contend with the rising cost of the fees.  As you may know, the lifetime sportsman license covers all stamp fees and additional fees with thee exception of special area permit fees.  He may move out of state and the license stays valid in TN.</p>

My son is very proud to tell his little buddies that he has the license to hunt Big Bears and Wild Boars and stuff...."Oh Wow!!"</p>

Congrats!!!!emoApplause That is great, a 2jigsJR is on the way. Buddy your life is about to change in a big way.emoBooHoo You can cut the fishing trips down to at least a third of what you have been doing and....well....come to think of it I'll let you find out on your own.emoGoofy Let's just say you can be driven crazy until the young'un reaches the age of around 23 years old.emoBigsmile Jmax

Amen JMax !! although I might substitute "insane" where you have "crazy".

Congrats again Steve ! Should we be looking for an infant boat seat and a "Baby on Boat" sign ??emoSmile

Speaking of the license, how does it work for getting the hunters safety after the issue of the license? I assume when they get older they must have the safety course prior to using the license???? Anyone know about this?

I would probably be an expert on this one. I have been a HS instructor for the last 11 years and our group teaches more kids than anyone else in the state. This time of the year, you will have very few options as most of us in the woods.

In Tennessee, anyone born after 1/1/69, and having reached the age of 10, must have a hunter safety card. There are two types of classes. A in class version (traditional) which is spread out over 3 evenings and a Saturday. The other option is a CD class. You do the course work online or with a CD and then come to a field day (on a Saturday) which will last about 8 hours. Both are good, but for youngsters I would recommend the traditional class. The problem with it is there is a big time commitment from you, the student or parent.

You can take the course at 9 years old. I will warn you, it is a tough course for 9 year olds. The only way I have seen 9 year olds successful is when there is heavy parental involvement.

Finally, you will find all the courses for this area and the state at www.tnwildlife.org. We are in Region 3. All of my courses for the year are posted at this website in early February. Our first class will be in March before Turkey Season and will continue throughout the year. Also don't forget this for your young sportsman; a new law was passed last year that requires a boating safety class for anyone born after 1/1/89 that is operating a motorized boat (including jet skis). Those courses are taught by different people around town. If you have any questions about any of this, do not hesitate to ask.
