<h1>Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees</h1><div class="p12"><div class="WCCol w300 fR clrR"><table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><tbody><tr><td style="padding-bottom: 20px"></td><td style="width: 100%"></td></tr></tbody></table></div><div class="mR165"><div><div class="textMedBlack">NBCBayArea.com</div><div class="textTimestamp">updated 54 minutes ago </div></div><p class="textBodyBlack"><span />On any other day at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Daniel Galli and his four friends would not even be noticed for wearing T-shirts with the American flag . But Cinco de Mayo is not any typical day especially on a campus with a large Mexican American student population.</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span />Galli says he and his friends were sitting at a table during brunch break when the vice principal asked two of the boys to remove American flag bandannas that they wearing on their heads and for the others to turn their American flag T-shirts inside out. When they refused, the boys were ordered to go to the principal's office.</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span />"They said we could wear it on any other day," Daniel Galli said, "but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it's supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today."</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span />The boys said the administrators called their T-shirts "incendiary" that would lead to fights on campus.</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span />"They said if we tried to go back to class with our shirts not taken off, they said it was defiance and we would get suspended," Dominic Maciel, Galli's friend, said.</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span />The boys really had no choice, and went home to avoid suspension. They say they're angry they were not allowed to express their American pride. Their parents are just as upset, calling what happened to their children, "total nonsense."</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span />"I think it's absolutely ridiculous," Julie Fagerstrom, Maciel's mom, said. "All they were doing was displaying their patriotic nature. They're expressing their individuality."</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span />But to many Mexican-American students at Live Oak, this was a big deal. They say they were offended by the five boys and others for wearing American colors on a Mexican holiday.</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span />"I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day," Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, said. "We don't deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July ."</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span />As for an apology, the boys and their families say, "fat chance."</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span />"I'm not going to apologize. I did nothing wrong," Galli said. "I went along with my normal day. I might have worn an American flag, but I'm an American and I'm proud to be an American."</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span />The five boys and their families met with a Morgan Hill Unified School District official Wednesday night. The district released a statement saying it does not agree with how Live Oak High School administrators handled this incident.</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span />The boys will not be suspended and they were told they can go back to school Thursday. They may even wear their red, white, and blue colors again, but this time, the day after Cinco de Mayo , there will be no controversy.</p></div></div>

I saw this earlier, it is ridicules. Another thing I have a gripe about.....The floods in Nashville, I mean they say how it was the 100 yr flood and how many people have lost their lives in it etc. But it did not get as much attention as a earthquake or tsunami in another country or Katrina, granted I know the others were bigger but this was a direct hit and hurt so many, and so many others lost so much. Again it is america worrying about someone and somewhere else before it worries about itself!!!

If it offends them that kids had the audacity to wear an American flag shirt on a Mexican heritage day, move to Mexico and celebrate there. Where's the ACLU? Had the roles been reversed, with Hispanics wearing Mexican colors on the Fourth of July and this happening, it would have been an outrage.

To be such a great country i sure am beginning to really dislike what we are becomming. Pretty soon illegal immigrants are going to have more civil rights and real american citizens, it they don't already. It reminds me of last year, when all mexicans and latinos laid out of work, because it was a holiday in there country!

Sorry to say, but they already do. What's next ? emoDoh

Might as well get used to it folks. As long as there are bleeding heart liberals we are going to see our country dismantled bit by bit and piece by piece until there is nothing left of what we once knew and held dear.

Well I caught a little of this on the news late last night. Seems like there is more to the story than Spurhunter's article stated. The boys were planning to wear the American flag to try and start a fight. They were told not to wear them the day before and they showed up the next day with full gear on, to be incendiary and to start trouble. Really what school allows bandanas to be worn? From the news show (abc or nbc I can't remember which) they appeared to be troublemakers, not supporters.

So this is how I see things, the kids were told not to do something because it would be a distraction. They did it anyway and were ask to change or go home. I see no fault in that. However if the kids were really wearing for the right reasons, then it would really stink. In this case, from what limited tv coverage that I have seen, the media has sensationalized a non-issue.

I dont care if they were trying to start a fight or not. These boys live in the USA. If they want to wear a shirt with the symbol of freedom on it...on a MEXICAN holiday...I DO NOT CARE!!! IF the mexicans want to celebrate their holiday without Americans....GO HOME!!!!!! emoUSA emoUSA emoUSA emoUSA emoUSA

Utter nonsense. I dont care why they wore it, THIS IS THE USA. Your saying that we should bow down to the Mexican students during their "holiday"?? </p>

I guess those bad Republicans made the principle apologize huh?</p>

I take it you never been in charge of discipline at a high school or talked to anyone that is. I live in the a Southern state, I guess my kids should be proud and wear the stars and bars regalia on MLK day.

A principal telling a kid to take off their bandana is not a big deal. Sending them home for the t-shirt, might have been overstepping bounds, but we don't know the history of the kids. I tend to think there was a justification in the principals reason (ie the kids wore what they did to push the boundaries and to start trouble not to show any pride). There is a reason why most of the schools in the Chattanooga area have dress codes.
