I have only had the boat a month now and only had it out once. I decided to change the lower unit oil before the next trip which is tomorrow. The oil that came out was GREEN, not lime not camo more like a womens bathroom paint!!! This cant be good, I used to change my yamahopper every year and never was it green. So far I have flushed at least 1 quart through it from the vent down, still letting it drain before I refill. So why was it green? Please dont tell me it was from water!!!!

I would say it was synthetic gear case oil. If you didn't get water out first and the baot had not been out for a couple days. emoScratch

I would say it is synthetic also. Mine was the same way when I took it to Arrowhead Marine to have it service. Water did not come out first, but evidently the synthetic is designed to turn green when water is getting in it. I had new seals installed while I was there, seals are cheaper than a burnt up lower unit!

Alrighty then tomorrow is the test. I will refill and run it tomorrow and then drain it when i get home. I'll let you know what i find!!! How hard is it to change the seals?
Dont you just love used older boats!!!!!!!!!!

Should you hear anything when you turn the prop by hand? Or should it be smooth? I can hear the gears, not grinding, just turning???????

Wrenchin2 can help you out with questions. The hardest part of changing the seals is pulling the barrings and getting everything really clean if Im not mistaken.

Well wed im going to carters, if i'm towed back i to the ramp 'll let you know. When I get home i'll change the lower unit oil again( I stocked up a while back). If I see green or water my boating season is probably kput.

If water didn't come out then the green fluid, it is just the color of the fluid. If it had water in it, it would be white or creamy looking. More than likely not a issue.

On a OMC, if you have the engine trimmed up, you can sometimes hear a light "grinding". This is the prop shaft "rubbing" the forward gear. If you trim it down, the noise will be gone. Hope this helps!
