Last night my dad and I finally took out this boat that we have been working on for a while now. It was running good out of WT, then once that we turned into the main channel toward the nuke plant it locked up. Well after we had a very nice gentleman and his wife haul us back to WT behind their sun tracker we took it out and realized that the motor would turn over but while it turned over it would turn the outdrive (but not the prop) basically turn the steering wheel and outdrive from the torque I guess. Again the prop spins freely when it is in neutral and locks when it is put into gear. It seems the shaft that connects the inboard to the outdrive is weirded up.

Any ideas?

You need to pull the outdrive off and take a look at the input shaft of the outdrive. There's a double cardan joint in that shaft, could be a joint failure or seizure.

Even more likely than that, is an upper gear housing bearing failure in the outdrive itself. Both the drive and driven gears' bearings are subject to oil starvation and seizures. Pretty easy to pull the top cover off the drive to see what's going on inside the upper housing.

My thoughts also...</p>

I have seen the gears in the upper go out so many times it is not even funny. If when you the engine over the outdrive is turning and turning the steering wheel, that is a pretty good indication. What outdrive is it? I have the books and tools for alpha1 outdrives and OMC Cobra.

Here is the manual for the Alpha

Its an OMC cobra 400 mated to a 3.0 L . Thanks for the info guys.

Wrenchin do you also work on Outdrives ?

If so I may be giving you a PM.

I dislike to cobra outdrives!!! I have the tools and manual for the cobra but have gotten away from the I/O stuff. You are welcome to use the tools for the upper if you want.

For what you will spend on that you can convert it over to a mercruiser outdrive that are a dime a dozen! You can buy a NEW outdrive and a conversion kit for around $1,500. Buy a conversion kit and a used outdrive for a little of nothing. There is a whole boat over here for $500 in town but it has the 2.5L. Here is the conversion kit.
