I think I've decided on an iFinder H2Oc, FHS Pro East maps, and a RAM mount for the boat. So far I've found it all for around $350, but I'm still shopping.

Hey, Mr. Wright...would you mind posting (or send me a PM) with your suggestions for tweaking the defaults for better performance, if it's not too big of a deal, word-wise? I'd appreciate it.

Any suggestions, tips, personal experiences, etc will be appreciated.

Lowrance options to change or set:

Menu-Map orientation-track up. Very confusing to have North up, which causes your GPS to track backwards on the screen when traveling South.

Menu-Map data-select map detail to high.

Menu-Map Categories Drawn-Down arrow to Water and deselect stumps. They just clutter your screen.

Menu-Menu-Alarms-Enable Arrival alarm and set distance to .01 miles (52.8ft)
While here disable Off Course alarm.

While on Map screen-Menu-Customize-Enter-Under Navigation select steer arrow.
You can add other items to your map screen. On my chart plotter I have depth, time, speed, as well as steer arrow.

The most accurate way to navigate to a waypoint (if you are looking for a small object, such as a brush pile) is using the navigation screen, not the map screen. Customize the Nav screen to make sure you have bearing, track, distance and steer arrow. Just make sure, as you approach the waypoint, that bearing and track are as close (degrees) as possible. If you insist on using the map screen to go to a waypoint that you continue to zoom in as far as possible as you approach your destination.

These are just a few of the things you can do to maximize the potential of any GPS.
